Congrats Wii-U, those are some mighty impressive figures. Genuinely never would've thought this was coming giving the anemic state it was in before. Makes up for the terrible year, at least. Let's hope next year has sales slightly more spread out over the course of 52 weeks rather than being concentrated in 4, though :P
Nevertheless, Nintendo certainly played a blinder on the holidays with this one. That advertising really, really, really worked, which is nice for them.
I'm a teensy bit surprised at 3DS. It's done extremely well, don't get me wrong, but if you'd told me last year that it would be down YoY despite having Pokemon & Monster Hunter I wouldn't have believed you. Puzzuls and Dragunz, however, has exceeded my expectations by quite some margin. It'll comfortably pass that 1m barrier which must be very pleasing for GungHo.
New releases - below expectations but nothing fatal for Drakengard. Shin Gundam Musou a little lower than I expected on PS3 and a little higher than I expected on Vita. Both of Namco's Omega Force-developed musou titles so far (the other being One Piece Pirate Warriors) seem to have garnered a respectable proportion of their sales on Vita, which much be pleasing for them.
Madoka Magicka, however, a disappointment. Even if we factor in a generous 20% digital, we're still looking at ~20k lower than the PSP version. Famitsu is suggesting that the game was completely sold out though, which is kind of odd.
Vita hardware pretty good, I guess. I'm resigned to the fact that it'll never be a holiday gift kind of console like Nintendo's are, so I suppose being up YoY by some is suggesting that at least it's a more desirable product now. Measuing against the first week of January from last year will be the real test though. It shot up from ~19k to ~31k, so I'm hoping for some similar % increases this year as people spend their holiday money. And maybe dragging up a bit of software with it.
That VitaTV drop is pretty funny btw :P
