PS4 allows you to access your own games on your own account on any console.
Family Share would have allowed any one of ten people to access your games on their own accounts on any console. It also meant that up to two people could play one copy of a game at the same time (as long as one was the owner), essentially meaning that if you had a pairing arrangement you and a friend/family member could pay half price for every game for the entire generation - and another nine family and friends could play your game at any time you're not using it.
It was - simply put - revolutionary. Unfortunately, much of the gaming media took no time to understand it, and railed against it. Of those few who understood it, some ultimately decided that it wasn't worth the trade off of losing some of the resale contol you have over physical disks, which I view as unfortunate.
