Forums - Microsoft - Reports Of Xbox One DRM ‘Inaccurate And False’ Says Microsoft

Last night, reports of lingering Xbox One DRM emerged based on a video of an offline Killer Instinct tournament. The video depicts the Xbox One returning to the home screen mid-match and then displaying an error message referencing a licensing issue. We reached out to Microsoft to find out what’s going on and received a definitive statement.

“As we have said previously, there is no DRM check-in every 24 hours,” a representative told us via email. “Reports that say otherwise are inaccurate and false.” The video in question is inconclusive, showing an error message.

Our Take

Given that this is the only report we’ve seen of lingering DRM, we believe that there is context missing. There is nothing in the video that suggests that the Xbox One hadn’t been connected for 24 hours (as some reports had suggested) or that the licensing issue wasn’t due to the owner of the game playing on an Xbox One that wasn’t his and then logging out (rendering the game license-less).

What does it matter, no one's going to believe it. Can't wait to read the comments claiming, "why should I trust MS?" They tried to screw me, blah blah blah.

Edit: 4 hours later and no one commented...

Edit (2)- Showed someone this article, and here's their response, "Considering that there's videotaped evidence of the drm, I'd say Microsoft is lying, I trust nothing that they say"

@Slade6alpha:

Why should I trust MS?

Inaccurate AND false? Isn't that redundant?

considering they had to patch DRM out with a mandatory day 1 update, it is possible that parts are still there in the back just turned off or ignored, and this was simply a glitch making it some how do something again.

Well, no one really said that in the other threads about this.  The first one referenced a joke article where the author was pretending to make a big deal about it, where most people commenting were either laughing along or getting upset because they took it seriously.

it could well just be a doctored video too, just capture the video first and then slap the error message on it, wouldn't take 2 mins to do in moviemaker and then run it as an avi on the X1 and pretend to play it and be shocked.

Easy way for a site to get a fuck load of hits.

The DRM is there and likely turned off until such a time they kick it on. Same with PS4 which is why Sony as always said its up to the publishers.

The only one with no DRM is Wii U.

They tried to play KI on like 10 consoles with only 1-3 Gamertags between the 10 consoles that had actual rights to the game having purchased it.

Yes it's DRM but it's no different than the other consoles. You can't play a new release like KI on 10 consoles with 1-3 accounts on Xbox One, 360, PS3, or PS4. It's sad that so many sites picked up on this as if the DRM is Xbox One specific. Even SonyGAF was quick to realize the tourney hosts were just trying to be cheap.
