I just had one of those calls from someone claiming to be a Microsoft service centre person. Fake obviously. I tried to keep them on the line as long as possible to waste their time. I'm afraid I didn't do very well, I think I only wasted about 10 minutes of their time before they decided I was on to them and they hung up. But I'm glad I got them to hang up on me, it felt like a small victory.
How do you handle those con artists who call you claiming to be from Microsoft and try to tell you they will fix your computer for you?

lol if you try to get help to fix an issue with your PC it can take hours of trolling through forums to get an answer to someone else who had your issue before you... I dont see how they think people will believe that anyone from Microsoft would be wasting their time ringing you personally out of the blue to offer you assistance in deleting your system32 folder...

One problem I do have on my PC is an undeletable malware adware add-on on Firefox called Okitspace. I've had a look around for ways to get rid of it, but every time I've come across "click on this link" instructions and I just don't trust where that link is going to take me, so I always get dead ends.

Root kits are nasty. You might be able to delete the files under Safe Mode if you know what you're doing but you'll probably need to download an extraction tool. Do you have a malware detection program? If not, go to download.com and find one--perhaps search "root kit" or look here http://download.cnet.com/best-windows-security-apps/?tag=rb_content;main
With programs like that, I always download from download.com because they've been scanned and tested.
