The difference between a fad and a trend is the period of time. Would you consider the CD storage a fad ? Obviously not because it became obsolete by DVDs. 

Would you consider the classic "pet rock" example as a fad ? Absolutely because the demand for it didn't last more than 3 MONTHS. 

What makes the WII similar to the "pet rock" in this case ? It's not similar AT ALL. 


its funny that article mentions the Hula hoop as a fad, yet it sold 24 million in it's first 4 months and 100 million in 2 years, thank you. yet your main point was that fads can't sell for years.

Fads can't sell past 3 YEARS. Nive try though. 

and who said the hula hoop stopped selling, i could find many more examples that match the 3 years, but why waste my time, you make your own rules to what a fad is lol. infact the hula hoop was an iconic image if the 1950s, so it sold way longer then 3 years.

And just how MANY MORE units did they sell after those 2 years ? I don't have a rule for fads. IT'S GENREALLY AGREED UPON THAT IT USUALLY LASTS 3 YEARS. NICE TRY THOUGH.

Um even today 2013 schools all over the world have hula hoops. Every toy shop has them. I wouldnt be surprised if since the 50's to today the hula hoop has hit over 1 billion. Its not  a fad. Hula hoop is still popular today. specially primary school and 3-7 years old range.

Sony is expecting 5 million but I don't know if that's an over or an underestimate because anything could happen once the new year starts. The PS4 could take a nosedive or it can keep up a decent momentum but the janurary and feburary NPD will clear the whole case up.

Dont forget Wii U i still selling even if less. PS4 would have to beat Wii U by alot each month to do March. I say around Sept.

Sure. I'm not some flip flopper compared to the others in this forum who drops away an actual point in order to further their own dumb agendas. 


Good. It's nice to see someone stick to there belief. However, I whole heartedly disagree with you on this one. There are so many factors that contribute to game sales. Activision or EA could put out a mediocre game, throw in some guns and explosions and back it with tens of millions of dollars in ads  and it will sell somewhat well as long as it sits around a 7 (metacritic). A smaller developer could self publish the same sort of game with better gameplay mechanics, deeper storyline, better graphics, meta rating of 9.5 etc and sell 1/3rd of what the mediocre game does due to less awareness, smaller marketing budget and not being established like the other two publishers. We as a game community tend to have more variables in factoring in a purchase for a specific game than your average Joe.

Anyways, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. 

Do you seriously believe in metascores ? COD ghosts has a lower metascore than BF4 yet I see many people keep saying that the campaign is better, casual or hardcore and the likes. 

Many people would seriously disagree with you using metascores to measure the quality of the game on this forum. Sure sales is based on what people like subjectively but the objective part is we should all have equal voting rights when buying a game. Just because I buy games different from casuals does not mean that my votes have a bigger effect because they clearly don't. 

To further my point as to why sales determine quality is that most people on this forum and other gaming forums agree that japanese game quality has dropped significantly too and did you know else dropped ? Their game sales come crashing to the grounds never seen before levels and all that has to do is with the quality of these games dropping. Once japanese game developers start to realize what quality means their game sales will skyrocket to never seen before levels and we'll have to stop ignoring their relevancy. This is one reason I keep saying that quality is linked to sales. 

Game sales determines relevancy of a franchise just as console sales determine the relevancy of consoles. Guess what ? The WII U is deemed as trash by the PS360 base and the mass market also agrees with them too. The WII U has demonstrated that it's software is irrelevant and thus it shows that the WII Us software lacks quality to be bought by anyone other than nintendo fans. 

To each and his own I guess. 

There seems to be a significant amount of people who take meta numbers as a way of deciding the quality of a game. It's obviously not meant to be taken as dogma but from what I've found it is fairly accurate for alot of games out there. They seem to be in the top 2000 of most visited website so there must be a significant amount of people who find the site informative.

I never said that my "vote" counted more than a casual. A purchase is a purchase. At the same time when it comes to a matter of opinion or to take advice on the quality of a game, who would you ask? A soccer mom who purchases Wii Play and says it's the best game out there or someone who has been gaming for 20 years? Yes, it does come down to personal taste but it could be compared to asking fininacial advice from someone who has been successful in their own respective industy or some guy living in his parents basement at 30 because he smoked to much weed :S

Yes, alot of Japanese companies have seemed to lost their magic when it comes to game development. Nintendo however is not one of those companies (I will agree that NSMBU was not their best effort). The problem was they attempted to appeal to Nintendo fans, casuals and tried to win over some of the PS3/360 crowd and they failed. Their marketing of the console was horrid so the casuals did not jump in, for the PS360 fans it wasn't powerful enough and for alot of Nintendo fans the games were not there at the start. The WiiU lacked software quality however they are just starting to make up for it (they should have waited until Nov 2013 to release). It would be unwise not to try the system because of it's low sales( Xbox,Gamecube &Dreamcast had great games despite low sales). A few hours of SMW3D and you'll be signing a different tune. The game is truly innovative and there does not seem to be too many people who have played it that disagree.
