Forums - Gaming - What's the point of photorealism?

I guess its because people believe that if you can create a realistic looking game, you can basically imerse yourself in a fantasy or Sci-fi world that looks so much like our own that you feel like you're living and experiencing a different world in the real world.

I prefer the Matrix. You guys can stay here in "the real world" if you want.

Because we think it can immerse ourselves in a game.

Live-action games gives you a sense of inmersion?

Another day, another hipster on the internet.

People spend ages trying to figure how complex aspects within society and the mind work. If you truly can't understand why an art style such as photorealism is popular, then you can't be very smart.

But hey let's think about something let's say um... That tomorrow all the developers in the world agree that photorealism is dumb, and decide to never use that art style again. That's sounds pretty unlikely, and honestly a little retarded. Well that's what this thread insinuates...

Don't blame me when all games look exactly the same, then.

Here's a pic of Killzone 7:

Now here's a pic of Call of Duty: World again at War 4

Call of Duty has better graphix. I mean, look at dem fire.

Because photorealism is max graphics spectrum. It works well with a lot of genres/games and no matter the graphics, it's still a game that can have anything happen in it; not just real life stuff. And besides, porn.

Fair point. The porn one as well

The same reason why we travel to the moon even though there is really nothing useful there. We're humans and we always want to push the boundaries and evolve and improve on everything we create and I think that's what makes certain humans so special (steve jobs) they always want to push the boundaries.

I don't think that's what games would look like when we talk about photorealism, I think they would look more like the CG you see in Avatar the movie.

Well, it's like why do we watch a movie instead of just reading a story? It's all the same right - one is words - which could give us all the same information, and the other we know that Christian Bale really isn't flying through the air in a bullet proof bat suit, but it's fun to believe that he is. And the more it appears that he is, the more we can emmerce ourself in it, and feel like we have lived an extra life beyond are own meek existence.

Anything thing that pulls us out of the fantasy tends to cheapen it - like when we see a string holding up a model space ship. Now, there are many mediums like graphic novels, cartoons, anime and stylized games that aren't meant to be photo realistic - but they usually have a more limited appeal that a more realistic game.

It's easier to get lost - and fun - much like the 'safe scare' of going on a roller coaster. We get to pretend to be something we are not, do things we can't, and re-spawn if we die. Photo realism is a stylized choice to help use 'believe' in the game more.

TL/DR: More people will connect better with a more realistic game.

I get what you're saying.  I just wanted to point out one thing.  Christian Bale was actually so committed to being an authentic Batman that he DID fly through the air in a bullet-proof Bat-Suit.  He also had his parents killed just to channel the pain of Bruce Wayne.

True, true, Christan Bale is very comitted.  I heard that he let himself get tied up and abused by Tommy Lee Jones, for some movie yet to be made.  Plus, had his heart replaced for another movie roll.  Truely, the method^3.

Clearly, this points out the need to help Christan Bale suspend belief better.  It's supposed to be play acting.  So it seems easy to conclude that all of photorealims of the last 120 years to to help Christan Bale not abuse himself so much.

I'm comfortable with that.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

For me, this is the point (cue my usual CGI example):

You can have that and gameplay still sucks. What's the point?

I'd rather watch a movie. Or a BBC nature doc narrated by Sir D. Attleboro.

Because then we won't feel so weird for falling in love with video game characters

I wouldn't be so sure about it.
