Forums - Gaming - Forbes Blogger: It May Be Time For Nintendo To Make Games, Not Consoles

In summary, he argues that Nintendo should continue to make handhelds, but its days of making home consoles are done, and it should make games for Sony and Microsoft.  He addresses the "Sega argument" by noting that Nintendo makes much better games than Sega, and as such, it's quality should not decline.

Thoughts?

I cant name you one sega game i ever payed for.
i cant name you one id buy in the future.

but id buy a few Nin games if they were on PS4

Nintendo should stop making consoles that don't turn them a profit. If the Wii U hardware was profitable the situation wouldn't be as bad and they could continue evolving on their own terms.

I feel similarly. The Wii should have been it's bang to go out of the hardware business. They printed money for 4 years straight. If they focused all of their resources in to the handheld department we could get a shit load of awesome games (2D metroid? :3)

Although, that means there'll be less competition in the console market, which is never a good thing.

He was pretty hard on the Wii:

"But I think it’s become clear to most the Wii was a fluke, a fad, and I’m willing to call it a creative failure despite its sales numbers. It only created the illusion Nintendo had executed some grand master plan to win the decade, when really they just sort of stumbled into it."

I disagree with him.  I think the problem is that Nintendo stopped supporting it too soon.  What was their last year of solid support, 2009 or 2010?  They abandoned it for the Wii U, which was rushed and that was a big mistake.  Oh, and the Wii U had very few games at launch anyway.  Since they abandoned the Wii completely, shouldn't the Wii U have had great first party support right away?  It seems like they sat around and collected money for a few years, and now they are paying the price.

I'll buy a game or two then

Edited the thread title, as these threads always attract people with the thought that someone of particular prominence is making these arguments (it always seems to happen with Forbes)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
