Forums - Nintendo - What Nintendo will probably do for Wii U's successor

Yeah I think the "Nintendo tablet" that is a handheld on the go and can stream wirelessly to the television at home is the next natural extension of the Nintendo hardware concept.

They are simply too much of a niche player in the console business barring a Wiimote like miracle and with higher development costs, a niche base of 20 million fans just puts Nintendo in too much of a tough spot. It was more workable in the GameCube days when dev costs were lower and even then they seemed bitterly dissapointed with the GCN.

To be honest the only "real" blue ocean that's immediately obvious now is sex gaming (lol) but of course Nintendo can't go there. Casual gaming, hardcore gaming are both red oceans now.

Whatever they dream up next, there's no possible way it will only be as powerful as the Wii U. That would literally be pointless; they would just make an add on before they did that. Even if their power is below that of the competition, it still has to go up every generation. (The Wii didn't go up much, but that was their move into being "behind.")

Nintendo is in a complex position. Right now if I was in charge I'd be frantically putting together an anti Wii U that could be released within two years. If the Wii U doesn't pick up they need an alternative as fast as possible. If things start to make a turn for the better, that project can be put on hold while a more thought out and original console is designed. I'd definitely look into building the system around a gimmick, but that wouldn't be a priority. The 3DS's gimmick was a failure. Now the system is selling just because of the great games. The Wii U gimmick is failing, and all the great games don't need it. Motion controls and to a much lesser extent the DS multi screens were one off successes that are unlikely to be repeated. I'd say it's better to focus on other innovations like online features than keep trying to re-find the Wiimote magic.

But, having an out of the way gimmick certainly doesn't hurt. The PS4 has the light-bar, touch-pad, and speaker while the XBONE has haptic triggers. Except for the DS4 light-bar not turning off, no one has any problems with these features. Sticking an equivalent gimmick or two in the next system would be ok. It just needs to be secondary, not the main attraction. A gimmick I'd personally invest is force feedback. Not the rumble on the XBONE triggers, but actually a force pushing the buttons back at you. Basically variable resistance. It would be pretty cool I think as a next gen version of rumble. Every game genre could support it too.

Interconnectivity between the new system and the 3DS would also be important. I find the concept of a portable/home console hybrid ridiculous, but incorporating aspects of that idea makes sense. I'd stick very cheap processors in every controller. In home use this allows some gimmicky features like assigning a user to a controller or turning on the controller when the console turns on. Combined with traveling however it would act more like a memory card. Take it to your friend's house and your profile follows you without the need of logging in. It can also have streetpass functionality with 3DSs. Sorry but you can't play just the controller. For that you'd need an LCD add on or a smartphone. Game would just be streamed to you. This specific feature really wouldn't be big, but it would be silly not to support it. Local multiplayer with select 3DS games would also become possible. Again not a feature that'd sell a lot of consoles, but it'd be silly not to support it.

Or something else.

The whole "our console is about as powerful as last gen consoles" thing simply doesn't work unless you have a MIND BLOWING idea for the controller to go with it.

They would be stupid to try that again, in 3-4 years the average $250 tablet will have graphics comparable to a PS3/360/Wii U, no one will care for another console that's bringing nothing new to the table.

What does that have to do with the discussion? No tablet in 2017 for $250 is going to produce comparable graphics to the PS4 or XBONE.

Well hypothetically if they're not willing to put all their eggs in that tablet console/portable hybrid ....

The New Nintendo Entertainment System:

- September 2016 Release (Should give them a comfortable 2 year head start)
- Built specifically for the US and European markets
- 4 TFLOP 20nm AMD GPGPU, customized by Nintendo, but largely off-the shelf saving R&D costs.
- 16GB DDR4 RAM + 4GB DDR3 (cheap) for OS
- No disc drive, runs 3DS like game cartridges (32-128GB)
- Can support 2K and 4K resolution games in some cases (4K TVs should be more commonplace by then)

- Break apart new motion controller, perhaps haptic feedback and/or a "central ball" that simulates force feedback/motion resistance when controller is attached?
- Will have a VR headset add-on (separate), can deliver higher image quality and better experience than PS4).
- Runs Wii U software in 4K resolution, but you have to download it from the eShop.
- Compatible with Wii/Wii U controllers.
- Perhaps Google or some other partner is involved with the system OS.

- Can stream a video signal to tablets for "off TV" play.
