Halo is a first party exclusive but the gamecube had plenty of third party games...

You couldn't play online and it came out over a weak after the PS2 and Xbox versions...

Yes you could...

And there were a few games that supported it such as Phantasy Star online...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantasy_Star_Online

But I get where you are goin with it... And you are right as well

YOU COULD NOT PLAY COD: FINEST HOUR ONLINE.  Sure you get a cookie for Phantasy Star, ONE game.  YAYYY!

Calm your panties... If you googled for once... there were plenty of games that you could play online on the gamecube... Phantasy Star was one example... Quit being a douche and google for once you silly bird (jk)

I love speculation! so here's my theory for Wii U/3DS successssor ;)

What I hope to see is a 2 in 1 gaming device (yes like many people think): a handheld that interacts with a ''TV box'', basically a Wii U but with the gamepad being the size of a DS and which fits your pocket

- Games will use cartridge or any alternative that can hold lots of data while still being small. They will be inserted in the handheld.
- The ''box'' which will let you play your games on the TV simply acts as a signal converter between the handheld and TV. With no input lag using Wii U's technology.
-The handheld will be able to produce Wii U-like graphics on its small HD screen (720p), and 1080p when being streamed through the box, to the TV. The handheld will also act as a controller, and playing on the TV will add some features (like in Windwaker HD for instance), but games will not focus on dual screen gameplay.
-All Nintendo developers will now only have to focus on 1 platform, thus, we might not have any game drought. And no need to buy 2 gaming devices.
-Price point could be 300$ or 250$, we're talking about Wii U graphic capabilities but scaled down to fit the handheld (Vita size or smaller).
-You can use your Wii U gamepad for local multiplayer games, or the pro controller. Wii remote compatibility might be removed.
-Most likely no backward compatibility with games.
-No more 3D screen, Nintendo knows most people don't care about it (I think).
-Back to the GBA design, meaning only 1 screen, but with more buttons (Wii U gamepad with smaller screen, and two 3DS circle pad)
-No more Wii name or DS name. Something like Nintendo Revolution or simply ''Nintendo''.
-4G for online multiplayer on the go.
-Uses Nintendo Network account, which will let you download all the VC games of your Wii U/3DS.
-Release it with 3 big 1st party title day 1 for maximum market penetration.

*What if it fails? How are they going to make money?
-How could it possibly fail when you have all Nintendo games in one package instead of 2? It would also be a lot easier to market. Remember Nintendo hardware sells only on the back of their games, nothing else.

*But history tells us Nintendo will release their next handheld in less than 2-3 years!
-Maybe they will take a different route this time and release it in 4 years? Or perhaps it's going to be possible to release it in 3 years...

If the theory doesn't make sense, please tell me so. I guess they could also make some kind of VR machine, but I really doubt it, I see it more as an accessory down the road.

PS: Nintendo hinted us when they said they were going to merge their console and handheld departments, why would they do that in the first place? They are also expanding their Kyoto HQ! see photos here for proof:

There were 7 online games.  Congratulations, the Dreamcast wins!

You have no idea how tired I am of people pulling out that BS adapter that 1% of the userbased used for 7 games.  Meanwhile SOCOM and Halo had 100's of thousands of people online at once.  Don't even try.

Sorry for the caps, but I thought it was appropriate...

It's not a bad idea, but I would say it needs PS4.5 graphics.   (Very doable in 4 years).

But that is what you don't get.  Compared to the competition it had none.  Fine then PS3 also had motion controls at launch because of Six Axis.  Actually a ton of games used it like a Wiimote so yeah sorry Wii didn't have anything special...

I didn't think the wii had anything special either... It just did it better just like how the ps2/xbox did online better than the gamecube

I also believe the ps2 was the first console to do motion with the EyeToy. But I might be wrong

2.) They accept their niche status in the home console market. Their next system will only be slighty more powerful than Wii U, but it will launch at $200. Most of their resources will then go towards expanding and creating more development teams, so that they can fully support their system without the need of 3rd partys.

Which is probably the best option and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.  Even if they did build a machine on par with what Sony and Microsoft produce, at best it would be splitting that market three ways.  Having third party support would help move units, of course, but Nintendo doesn't really develop any exclusives that compete directly with the Uncharteds and the Halos of the world.  Most of the people buying that powerful Nintendo console would be the same people buying the low-power Nintendo console.

I think they're simply better off staying niche with a cheaper console sold at a clear profit.  The hard part would be convincing Nintendo fanatics that it's okay being "number 3", if that's how it turns out.

I'll be interested to see if they stay with the current business model of gambling big on innovative/gimmicky hardware.  We've seen both the plus side of that and the negative side of that in successive generations.  Personally, I think the odds point to more hits than misses with that approach.  It's probably better to keep building on your hits.
