This is how Marvel and DC split.
Marvel has always been very social or dealt with social problems. Marvel has always relied on the differences between you and me or them and us. Some examples are of the X-men. They were the social outcast, the gays the freaks you don't want to deal with. With Blade the vampire hunter, he was again an outcast for being half vampire have human. The Thing in the fantastic Four who is always being seen as a monster, but deep inside he was a caring and loving man. Iron man who personifies the war between man's knowledge and the right to arms(gun control). Ghost rider, a man in purgatory for selling his soul to the Devil. Thor and his fight to understand the human spirit(at least in the movies).
DC has always been political. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes. Who guards the guardmen. We can see this when Lex Luthor became president. In The Dark Knight Returns, an aging Batman returns to lead a new government to fight for the old code(law). Green lantern are the police of the universe. Wonderwoman is said to be a feminist movement, but also she is of royalty and of things like dignitary. Aquaman is King of the sea and has been featured as a peace maker for land and sea.
Where Marvel fights bigotry, DC fights corruption. Where Marvel focus is on peace, DC focus is on Safety. Where Marvel is Worldly issues, DC is universal(which is why they're always fighting people from other dimensions.)
I give it to DC because they came out with the Justice League TV series along with the thought provoking OVAs like; Under the Red hood, or Flashpoint paradox. When it comes to Movies DC gave us The Watchmen. Not to action oriented, but gave solid performances with their actors and made it seem like more than a comic book movie. In comics, DC gave us the Killing joke. Watchmen. Identity crisis. The Dark Knight Returns. Red Son. Please add if you know more that I've missed.
Sorry, but Marvel gave us an intellectual hulk in their cartoons. Since the Spiderman the animated series, their cartoons have been dull and lack luster and full of teenage angst. I will say though, the Spectatular spiderman animated version was good. The Ultimate Spiderman is terrible and just full of over the top action. Despite the great Summer movies they've produced, they're starting to get played out. The original Spiderman movie was a spectacular for the eyes(sorry for pun), but afterwards, the magic lost its luster which did not come back for the amazing spiderman. Even now I'm starting to get tired of the over the top action. And it seems their story telling quality is suffering. I'm looking at Iron Man 3.
Movies: Marvel for their quantity of high profile movies, but lower in quality. If DC had their Justice League movie out, maybe.
Animation: DC for great though provoking more than crazy over the top action. I hope they translate Red Son into an OVA.
Comics: DC. Just wonderful takes on story. Watchmen, Tower of Babel, Red Son, Crisis on inifinite earth.
Heroes: DC, why OP heros. Superman, Green lanter(s), The Flash, Martian Man Hunter, Wonderwoman, Batman(If you can't beat batman in chess, you won't win the war against him). Orian, Shazam(who is more or less as strong as Superman).
Villains: DC. The Joker, Lex Luthor, Darkseid, Reverse Flash, Ra's al Ghul, General Zod, Parallax, the the list goes on.
