| Jega said: Xbox Live was getting a little hate last gen for having to pay for it, while the PS3 was free to play online. Many Xbox fans predicted that sony would change their tune after seeing how successful Microsoft was with the paid subscriptions. PSN is no longer free. Is PSN worth the price or was Playstation fans just upset that people were paying for live and not for PSN.
Mod edit: Took out the picture, feel free to replace it with an actual PSN picture.
Lol! You guys gotta love me! Image courtesy of google images. |
PSN is in fact still free. PS3, Vita, PSP owners can all still play online multiplayer games for free over PSN and PS4 owners (along with forementioned device owners) can still access ALL other services without paying Sony a fee.
The ONLY thing that requires PS+ (which I would argue is not representative of PSN as a whole) is some extra tacked on features and multiplayer for PS4 owners.
PSN is still very much free. It is PS+ that is not free and that takes care of certain premium features and multiplayer on PS4.
I said it years ago...
Once Sony starts charging for online play, Playstation fans will suddenly be okay with the idea. As expected, now people just complain which is the better value.

Well you also have to consider M$ only makes decisions based on greed.
When Sony does anything its because it was necessary and best for the gaming community.

Did you also predict that PS4 was gonna sell more than the Xbone in the US and UK just because of the price?
Well I don't have a ps4 yet, but I'm with PS+ so no changes for me. $50 a year to play online isn't actually extortion but when you have a competitor whos online is free, it feels like it is. This is no longer the case unless you deem Nintendo to be your competition. Also I think the gen probably proved to most Playstation owners that its a payed service will birth a better service, although my only real gripe with PSN is download+install speed and the Store layout.

Are you checking if I have common sense?
Playstation has a large following and now that have price in their favor.
But try staying on topic.

Because imo it is a fantastic unparalleled paid for service on consoles. I have been a PS+ member since day 1 and not once have I thought I am not getting my £3.33 ( it is really less as I stacked up on deals) worth of content per month.
When a newcomer to the PS4 realises that they need to get PS+ it is an easy sell as it has content benefits that are obvious other the ability to simply play multi player.
Sony got it right with PS+.
The cutest part is how the discussion shifts from how disgusting and indefensible paying for online play is, to "well its ok because it's the best value" or "well MS started it" LOL. It's like the exclusives complaining. Suddenly securing timed exclusives is bad for the industry, yet no one minded a bit when Sony was doing it during the PS2 era with franchises like GTA. Enthusiasts of all consoles will make loopholes and contradict themselves when it suits them.

They do not. The only thing you can do on an Xbox One without Gold is Blu-rays, single player games and TV.
