Many Xbox fans predicted that sony would change their tune after seeing how successful Microsoft was with the paid subscriptions. PSN is no longer free. Is PSN worth the price or was Playstation fans just upset that people were paying for live and not for PSN.

PSN is in fact still free. PS3, Vita, PSP owners can all still play online multiplayer games for free over PSN and PS4 owners (along with forementioned device owners) can still access ALL other services without paying Sony a fee.
The ONLY thing that requires PS+ (which I would argue is not representative of PSN as a whole) is some extra tacked on features and multiplayer for PS4 owners.
PSN is still very much free. It is PS+ that is not free and that takes care of certain premium features and multiplayer on PS4.
