GT6 still has mandatory licenses, online is locked behind National A license (2nd one). The license tests themselves are locked as well. You have to earn stars by winning races to unlock them.
There is of course arcade mode if you simply want to jump in, with a hugely restricted car list as the downside.
I've golded everything up to halfway through the National B events and haven't needed to buy or tweak a car yet. (apart from the starter car the game tells you to buy) Just started on the national A license test.
But yes where are all the great arcade racers, midnight club, burnout, wipeout, TDU, PGR, Motorstorm, Rally games in general. WRC3 was enjoyable but not up to the quality of the ps2/xbox era rally games.
The attempt to make them more appealing by adding guns hasn't worked, back to pure racing please.
Next to open world it would also be nice to see hot seat crash mode back in Burnout, and please clearly mark the races next time. I think a lot of people are turned off by these open world racers because they require you to read the map while hurtling along at 200mph. NFS Rivals is a lot of fun, but I've dropped out of a race plenty times by taking a wrong turn. Reading the map at 200mph, while avoiding cops/racers, obstacles, spike strips/stun mines, emp lock ons, while a helicopter is shining a spotlight in your eyes is just a bit too much to ask.
