Forums - Gaming - Kotaku - Why resolution matters

I hope all future Xbox One games are designed to run at 1080p .

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

But that gif was horrible and very badly done. check thoses png on a native 1080p display:

http://cdn0.sbnation.com/assets/3647859/AC4-PS4.png

And remember that the sharpening filter is perfect for compressed or downsampled media. But when you compare on a native screen, the illusions are shattered.

Wow, if people still cant tell them apart there is clearly something wrong with their eyes. Colors are much more vibrant on PS4 and everything is just sharper, I dont even need to zoom in to see the difference.

The difference is easy to see but as to which one is better I still couldn't tell. The PS4 one seems too light and the boat seems blurry, the leaves in the tree look better though. There isn't one of the two that makes me go "Wow, this is much better" or "Damn, this looks bad".

Then you'd be able to once you see them on a 1080p tv screen. But just by looking at those pics on my monitor its very apparent which one is sharper, has a higher resolution, more vivid colors and better AA. The disparity in graphics is bigger than any PS360 multiplat game. I was anticipating true next gen multiplats to be better on PS4 but honestly didnt expect cross gen games that dont push HW to look better as well.

If you really think the boat seems blurry compared to X1 then I think you really prefer the sharpening effect, (highlight some details, destroy most others).

But even if X1 seems sharper at some distance, when you look closer you'll see that in fact there are less sub-details on the "sharpened" 900p ship compared to 1080p, that's a tru fact, look anywhere on the image.

You know, the first 2 weeks I was like you and really, honestly prefered any X1 version of games I watched, because as you said, X1 seemed "sharper".

But then I understood my mistake. the sharpening effect completely destroy sub-details and invent artifacts, make all the textures grainy, is horrible artistically, doesn't respect the original work of the designers. I am talking here only of the magical sharpener, not the slight resolution difference which is less important and not a big deal.

But this sharpening with the combined crushed black.... It is evil. No wonder Dice removed the sharpen effect on the retail X1 BF4.

I think you wanted to quote truckosaurus.

Because next gen consoles are actually more capable than a shit ton of PCs today? (Well, PS4 anyway)

Don't act like full HD resolution is something that's only desirable on PC

If resolution matters that much then there's no need to limit yourself to 1080p on consoles.

Because 4k resolution is rampant on PCs, right?  Maybe if you play Zorg on it.

4k is an extreme rarity even among high end PCs

It matters to me because I have a big enough TV to notice it. I only play PS1, PS2, and Wii games with emulators because of the resolution gains (and smoothing). If people say resolution doesn't matter, they either have poor eyesight, have small TVs, are too far away from their TV to notice, or just don't know any better.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

wow that damage control and deflecting..Why bring up the strawman PC, when many games are console only? PC is too expensive or requires too much know how for many, also many don't like playing on PC. Stop spinning.

1080P > 900P and 720P. fact. Anyone who had a choice between 1080p and 720p for the same game,,,any logical person would rather 1080p.

Oh ok, so now we're removing PC because it destroys your argument. That's cool.

Of course, all we're left with is the bolded, but unfortunately I for the life of me cannot seem to find a PS4 version of Killer Instinct or Ryse anywhere.

A little off topic but not being able to play those two games on PS4 is kind of irrelevant as to why resolution matters. Does it matter though? Sure it does! Is it something that will make or break a purchase no. As you are implying it is the games that you want that matter!

Also off topic....KI is AWESOME and I can't wait until they release more characters! But seriously Ryse LOOKS great but it is kind of boring, stale and repetitive. Don't get me wrong I still liked the game but nothing to write home about IMO.

I guess it does matter to some people. It doesn't to me. I checked that GIF of ACIV in the article and I couldn't tell which one was "the better one". When I buy a PS4, it'll be because it has games that interest me, not because of a minor resolution difference.

There must be something wrong with your eyes. When I saw the comparison I immediately thought this had to be doctored. I never thought the difference would be this huge! Add to this that stupid MS upscaler that turns half the details into one huge black blob and there is no way any reasonable person can pick XO over PS4. Getting it as your third console (after PS4 and Wii U) just for the exclusives down the line - perfectly fine and reasonable, but getting it now and playing multiplats on it? Just lol.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

Who removed PC? It has been acknowledged PC is the best system........

BUT, how does that help if you want to play destiny? Halo? Uncharted? Gran turismo? Game doesn;t exist on PC how does that help you?

The number of people who own PC's to be able to run PC games at 1080P and on high settings is low.

PC> Ps4>x1

Resolution matters
Someone points out PCs have better
OP is now showing how wrong their original point was by trying to downplay the higher res of PC

Only matters when its what the PS4 can do right?
Its only important when you can hold it over another product. The moment another product has better, well its not so important any more...lol

Buy me a PC capable of playing games in 4k with a nice framerate (30-60 fps is enough for me, depending on genre) for 400 Euro and I'm gonna ditch the PS4. Seriously.

Oh yeah, and a 4k TV for the price of a regular Full 1080p TV.
