You could program an engine that gives the illusion of focus if the eyes are directed at a certain object. it will just render whatever you look the correct way. Depending on how much your eyes focus. Its a trick but did you ever see it in a working system ? If not you can not dismiss the possibility of it being good enough one day to fool us.

But if thats not good enough for you, what about directly projecting light into the eyes with millions of tiny Lasers. There would be no difference to real life if you can perfectly manipulate them.

It's about distance.  We say things are in focus when light rays converge on the retina with a certain amount of clarity.  But distance changes the point of convergance.  Lenses adjust for this by changing shape.  (Or in the case of mechanical optics, changing the distance between a stack of lenses.)

Light from a flat plane will always have the same distance, and lenses will never have to change shape.  (The illusion of depth on stereoscopic 3D is more phsycological than physical.)

Isn`t that solvable with adaptive optics ? You could change the point of convergence if you could manipulate the lenses in a device ?

Yes with a lens stack or electronic liquid lenses you can change the focal plane..

The concept has already been proven

Getting all that to fit in glasses with a high res enough screen is the challenge.

It seems like the writer of that paper is working on AR glasses now, no head mounted volumetric world display in the works atm.

Nice!  Thanks for the links.  Me go read.
