If someone here is critizing this game after not playing it, and don't respect the opinion of someone that it did, he/she just need to go somewhere else. It's Selnor's opinion and he liked it, that's all. Ryse is becoming the type of game that is funny to bullshit, by a lot of people that not even try to play it. I hate that kind of habit. Ryse seems to be a polarizing game, some will love it for what it is, and other will hate for what is not.

I felt the same with a game like FF XIII. Both were technically and visually spectacular, with a focus on its gameplay mechanics, but both suffered or repetetiveness and lack of content. For me FF XIII was a great experience, somewhere between 8'5-9, for others was an abomination. If Selnor is in the same situation i can understand him very well.

I watch a video of the first 30 min, so my opinion is just an opinion and very incomplete, and for me it looked spectacular and it felt repetitive after 15 mins, but that's all. I don't know if i will like the complete game, but i'm sure i will glady try it.

You sound like one of those typical anthropolgy students I disdain so much.

Some people's opinions are plainly not worth hearing. At all. Selnor said this is better than TLOU and Uncharted 2. This is bordering on insanity. If Ryse was on PS4 then what would Selnor have said?

"Ryse seems to be a polarizing game"

You think that *might* have something to do with it being an exclusive launch game with the best graphics for its system?

" felt the same with a game like FF XIII. Both were technically and visually spectacular, with a focus on its gameplay mechanics, but both suffered or repetetiveness and lack of content. For me FF XIII was a great experience"

I got 12 hours into the campaign by holding forward and pressing X. (A on Xbox). It was the most linear, boring game I played on PS3. The visuals were fantastic, but it is embarrassingly weak compared to previous FF games. That's why it sucks. It went WAY backward.

Thank you for calling me an anthropology student!!!!, you're such a charmimg person....

So I bought Ryse yesterday and I would guess I am about 40% or so through the game so far. Played it late last night and a bunch today. Here are my thoughts:

Pros:
The cinematic approach. Lots of games did this route last gen, makes sense for this to be one of those considering it began last gen. It adds to the immersion and feeling as if you are playing out a story.

Graphics. Holy shit! This game looks amazing. By far the most gorgeous console game I have ever played. Cut scenes are beautiful, but even the core gameplay looks just amazing. I am used to past gens where the drop off from cut scene to gameplay is dramatic, especially in games with pre-rendered ones like Ryse. But not the case. And the animations are excellent.

Combat. People (myself included) have compared the combat to games like Ass Creed, God of War, Batman, etc. What it really boils down to is a score attack type element to every single big battle. You're trying to string together huge combos and beat your best score. I love the aggressive nature of the combat. Every swing of the sword and bash of the shield looks and feels agitated. The "beat my score" nature to the combat makes its simplistic yet deep design all the more satisfying. And the executions are just brutal. My brother was over watching me play and said "holy crap!" at least 10 times as I lobbed off arms, legs, and slit throats. And there are plenty of environmental executions, so you are only limited by your own creativity.

Cons:
You can really tell this game has Kinect roots. Some of the areas of the game are just so simplistic in design, it's clear they ran out of time for completely removing forced Kinect out in time for launch. A lot of the archer segments seem like this so far, as do the siege elements.

Enemy character models look absolutely incredible, but there needs to be more variety.

Extreme auto aim when targeting some of the launchers or throwing one of your sticks with a pointy end.

This last one is a minor/silly complaint, but I wish there were more weapon variety. But I know it's based on Roman soldiers and is realistic to that.

Overall I was extremely hyped for the game and thus far have been pleased. I still need to finish it and sink some time into the co-op stuff, but right now I would give it a solid 7 out of 10. The game has LOADS of potential in any sequel(s). It's quite clear this is a cross-gen game that was deeply rooted in Kinect, so more time to build a Ryse 2 from the ground up for next gen should make it all the more intense. And maybe open up the possibility for multiple weapons, and enemies that aren't the same 5-6 barbarians over and over.

Glad your enjoying it. 40%,so Im guessing around the level called The King? The best of the game is the last 50%. So if you like the cinematic approach now, it gets wayy better. Enjoy the last half. :)

lol The King is exactly what level I am on.

Started getting into the co-op stuff today. I love the aspect of collecting booster packs for better gear. I just hope it isn't an insane grind where they want you to maybe buy gold with real monies instead.

Wow.

By my count only three of us actually responded nicely to your review. The rest just trolled. Stay classy guys.

Yea, they arein force!

And since most never played it they have no legetimate opinion.  Just a waste of their time.

Glad he liked the game, it's pretty neat.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

You were right, everything was kicked up a notch on the next level and it has remained that way through the rest of the game. *spoilers* I am just past the Commodus fight, so I guess I am right near the end. I don't remember if its Edge or End of the World but whichever one, that level is amazing. A true showcase of next gen graphics. I love the cut scenes too, so pretty.

But mostly the latter half of the game it seems they really opened it up more and are mixing up the enemies and gameplay. I wonder if maybe that represents where they were in development when it was switched from a Kinect title to a traditional controller title. And I love how the game now forces you to pretty much use all elements of the combat. This is something I never liked about titles like Inferno, God of War, or Conan. The option was there to go deeper in combat but it was never really required. Now in Ryse I am at a point where I really need to get my timing down on deflections and attacks or the enemies counter the shit out of me.

I didn't even realize all the way through the game until I was fighting Commodus that you are graded on timing for each execution button press.

The story took an amazing twist that even though someone had told me *spoilers* Marius dies, I had no idea was coming. I wish I could have enacted revenge on Barilius (sp) and Commodus though instead of cinematics. The game really relies on cinematics. It's like a Naughty Dog game, big production and cinematic values, game is pretty linear, and a chore at times to play. But the story and atmosphere are great.

btw MS is going to start selling it digitally for $40 today as they test out selling titles digital for less than retail. I gave the game a 7 originally, I think I'd still give it that, but I would give it a 7.5 or 8 if I'd bought it for $40. There's also supposed to be sales on the DLC leading up to new DLC the 25th IIRC. It has a horde type survival mode. Yes please.

Lets also hope this game does well digitally so MS sells more titles at a 33% savings versus physical retail.

not gonna lie read this review out of morbid curiousity

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Haven't played it but based on how short it is and how repetitive the combat gets I'd say a 6 is being generous

Welcome to the 14th lad. Welcome to Ryse Son Of Rome. There hasnt been to many adaptions of Brutal Rome in the videogame world outside of strategy sims, which is unusual because the time period offers many advantages to game genres outside that. The Story of Ryse kicks off with Rome under siege and the Emperor runnig deeper into his chambers for fear of his life.

Its instantly clear from the minute the game begins its going to be a cinematic friven experience. The Presentaation hits you straight away. The garment moving freely as the Emperor scrambles down his halls. Wrinkles and blemishes cover his skin and building breaking apart around him. Its a feast for the senses from the opening cinematic. This breathes way to a battle ridden bridge outside the palace walls. Where we are introduced to our aspiring General Marius Titus. From here We are introduced to combat and must learn as you fight to cross the bridge to your Emperor. As an Opening its pretty good, makes you ask a few questions and makes good on the vision of Rome.

The game from there moves back in time where you watch your family get butcherd by the Brittons, and from there you join the 14th in seek of revenge. Its a cliche story, but it does contain a good story even so. Really the star of the show is its presentation of this. From the extremely detailed visuals to the animations and voice acting, Ryse is brilliant in every single one. The acting on the characters is beyond anything that we have seen before. Particularly the facial animation. Lip syncing rarely looks out of place its that good. This is largely carried over to the gameplay and its combat. The engines ability to go right in close for executions is rayed with gorgeous detail on every part of the character. You can even see his leg muscles flex during combat. He gets muddier and bloodier as the campaign unfolds. Its this that makes you see next gen has arrived.

The game consists of mainly linear combat. Its actually not to disimilar to the Gears Of War format. Linear path, some combat, linear path etc. Its clearly focused on driving you through the campaign. Its wanting to show you a story unfolding. If your after a wide open game with multiple choices and freedom this isnt the game for you. But those who love a good linear cinematic experience Ryse portrays extremely well. I played through on my first play the Centurion difficulty, and the gameplay was pretty challenging. The combat makes you time yourself, watch instead of button mash and a few hits would take down a considerable amount of my health. I did die a fair bit later into the game, sometimes you could have 7 or 8 at the same time to deal with. There is quite a few different enemies in the later levels that provide a different challenge within the combat of Ryse. With XP giving you upgrades and executions that will increase health bars and focus bars, as well as stronger attack bonuses. Much needed on the harder difficulties.

There are sections in the game where you will control your army beside you as a unit, moving forward and crouching down to block the arrows coming in. Get close enough and you can throw spears back to kill them. Or for example you can take control of a ballista and mow down soldiers. It adds a bit of cinematic to the gameplay along with the combat. And breaks up the normal combat nicely.

There is a Gladiator multiplayer that allows you and a friend to compete in the collosium in a Horde mode kind of fashion. Here you and a friend can pitch together to earn the crowds respect and perform 2 player executions and work together. Its actually a real challenge and you can upgrade your Gladiator in your time spent playing there. Its nothing revolutionary but is enjoyable on the side of the main event. If you didnt play this though you wouldnt be missing the reason your here.

My time with Ryse so far has consisted of one of the best presented cinematic games there is. To a level of fidelity not yet seen before. Its not perfect, I'd like to see more mythical elements incorporated into the story, which granted does touch on it towards the end. The story has an evil side and contains a few twists. With perfromances that are very impressive. This is what Ryse is supposed to be, a combat driven experience of brutal Rome and one that Id reccomend entirely.

Overall Rating : 8.5/10

Thanks for the review. Good that you enjoyed the game. But personally I think your rating is a bit too high, maybe I was too hyped and therefore was very dissapointed in this game.

Just purchased it with the discount... Will let you know my opinion
