The numbers are reliable, though they get less reliable the more recent they get. Of course they also get less reliable if you're looking at very old numbers!
I'd say they're very reliable after some time has past. They might not be very accurate when the first sales numbers goes up (although, they're probably good enough), but after some adjustments I'd say they're pretty good.

Physical retail? Somewhat.
Hardware? Adjustments everywhere
Preorders? Lolz
Luckily the system in flexible and admits when its wrong and adjusts accordingly.
No digital tracking is gonna be the death of this site as a tracker, I see it just focusing on sales everyone else reports (kinda is like that now anyhow).

But i believe that the error are not greater than 10%.
So, I would say it is 90% reliable.
Michael Pachter - an analyst from Wedbush Securities adress in VGCharz in this episode. He's largly very positive about the work done on this site.
