Forums - Microsoft - Xbox One Can’t Display Available Hard Drive Space

On November 22, the Xbox One will join the PS4 on store shelves and officially usher in the eighth generation of video games. We reviewed both consoles, with the PS4 sporting superior hardware and a brighter future for games, and the Xbox One boastingsuperior media features. Due to the consoles’ lack of support for external storage, neither is very supportive of viewing media that isn’t either purchased from Sony and Microsoft’s respective digital storefronts, or streaming from a service available on theconsole. The lack of storage support goes even further than this, it turns out, as the Xbox One doesn’t display the available capacity on the hard drive.

The lack of this bit of info isn’t detrimental, but it will get obnoxious for those that install games onto their Xbox One. Microsoft’s official reason for this decision is because the it wants the storage management on the Xbox One to be automatic — in that we’re not manually managing our storage space too often. You can, at least, view how much space each individual piece of software uses, so you can estimate how much free space is available on your hard drive.

The lack of this information also means that it’s not exactly clear how much free space your hard drive actually has out of the box. The PS4, by comparison, reserves around 100GB for the operating system and software — and likely future updates and other fiddly bits — and does display storage capacity.

It’s obnoxious that the Xbox One doesn’t display the amount of available storage space, but it won’t ruin your life. It’ll just make it a little more inconvenient when you’re running low on space.

Weird, but im sure they can add this with an update

Stuff like this isn't surprising me at all. MS is doing its utmost to be as anti-consumer as possible with the XO. Their policy is disgusting on every step of the way. I hope the customers react appropriately.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

That's dumb unless their system is perfect in the way it automatically handles the data, and I'm sure it's not.

I'd find that very annoying, when you want to install a new game but not enough space, how you meant to know to delete 1GB of data to make enough room or 40GB..

It is really weird. Did they run out of time!?

Is there any other device that doesn't let you see how much memory you are using and or have left?

What do they even mean by "it wants the storage management on the Xbox One to be automatic"?

No troll is too much for me to handle. I rehabilitate trolls, I train people. I am the Troll Whisperer.

Honestly who cares at launch. Look I build software for a living and we always push at clients to build the most important things first and the least last. For a launch of a game console the way to see how much space you have left would be way down on the list. Is it even possible to fill the HDD at launch? What about a month later? How about 3 months later? Then think that is possible how about probable? Honestly at what time are the most avid gamers really going to fill up the HDD. Then make sure to have tools to check the storage before that time. Not to mention it does provide for ways to delete games (You still own them and can reinstall free of charge).

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Cboat said it weeks ago, the OS isnt finished yet, and the more info we get the more its obvious. very long booting time, twitch streaming being cut out in the last minute and now this. im sure other stuff will pop up. they will all be ironed out in the coming months, but its pretty obvious Cboat was right, again.

Sounds like an revoutionary and intuative system where if your memory is full it'll tell you, "you don't have enough space on the harddrive". Really neat stuff going on with the Xbox.

So consumers can see the size of items on the drive and use that to estimate how much storage is left? They said that? lmao. even MS-DOS is more verbose.

How are you supposed to know how much is the formatted size?
