No Dolby 5.1 Support On Xbox One Optical Port

by Angie Santiago

It has been revealed that there is no Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound support on the Xbox One’s optical out port. There is a “Surround Sound (BETA)” option, however, but Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound is downgraded to stereo through the optical port. Users who have surround sound headsets might want to be wary of this issue.

Or take my peculiar AV setup: I like to play games and watch movies with an Astro surround-sound headset, which decodes Dolby 5.1 audio from an optical input cable. However, the Xbox One is currently only able to output stereo and DTS Digital through its optical output. My headphone receiver can’t read DTS Digital, so I have to output in stereo, and my surround headphones turn into regular old headphones.

The issue is also prevalent when using your cable box with your Xbox One. The audio that comes out from using the console is downgraded to stereo format. Microsoft has stated that a non-beta option for surround sound audio output will be available soon, but not at launch. Surround sound is rather important to many people, especially to gamers who want to fully immerse themselves in their gaming experience. A lack of proper Dolby 5.1 will make that somewhat difficult. For those who aren’t affected by this can continue to enjoy their games and movies as is.

This tech has been around forever, how has this not included at launch? I know its coming but MS is taking a EA approach to basic shit...

And before I get flamed, Yes I know the ps4 cant play mp3s or stream from media servers. Same for them as well..

Odd.

must-have-list for platforms i don't own yet:

WiiU: Donkey Kong

XBone: Dead Rising 3, Ryse

Weird omission. Hopefully added post launch.

deal breaker... for now.

hopefully it gets fixed sooner rather than later. i using a 5.1/7.1 surround sound headset. i dont want to game, and watch movies with stereo sound.

Goddamn, optical is the only way I can get my surround setup to work :( Hopefully they fix this soon, I can't go back to stereo after hearing everything in surround for over a decade.

Odds are your surround sound system also uses DTS and you should be fine. This should mainly affect Surround Sound headset users.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

This is baffling along with the lack of support for 3D. How do you focus your advertising and presentations on the multimedia aspect of your system and not support either of these? Somebody dropped the ball on this.

It is near the end of the end....

But the game may only output in Dolby Digital?

That I don't know. I'm speaking mainly about TV.

This ain't looking good. Console seriously seems rushed.
