Dunno about that. If the console fails this quickly then an extended warranty seems like a bit of a waste of money because if your PS4 lasts a year I expect you'll be golden. So far all of the reports are of PS4's bricking out of the box, so a genuinely defective unit, not a design fault per se. Whereas RRoD was a design fault with a slow burn. So far very different phenomenon. Not to say PS4 doesn't have a slow burning design fault, I think everyone is holding their breath a bit with the smallness of the unit and the internal power supply and the potential for inadequate heat distribution.
Hopefully people will play a lot of PS4 over the first few months and if there are any problems with overheating this will become apparent well inside the stadnard warranty period. Then we can all wait for a redesign to give us an external power brick, or the inevitable internal redesign to more efficient and less heat producing internals.
Fortunately here in New Zealand we have superior consumer protection laws. If a console fails due to no abuse by the consumer then it is the reasonable lifetime of the product for which the manufacturer is responsible, not just the warranty period. Reasonable lifetime of a console must be at least 4 or 5 years, so that's how long I have before it would be unreasonable for me to expect Sony to dort out a console failure not cause by me spilling coffee on it, or allowing the vents to be clogged up with dust. I think regular clearing of the PS4 vents will be an absolute must. Unlike my PS3 which I remember to do about once a year.
