I think we can all agree with what the word "success" means on a sales site, right ? If it's not going to compete or more importantly start a huge market then why is nvidia even bothering ? I don't get why nvidia continues to sell the shield if it doesn't generate a sizable profit.

That it met the company's sales targets? Nvidia is not trying to make a mass market device, it's a niche device. It's probably high margin like all Nvidia's other products. And as I said it's a tool to test their streaming tech and also to advertise their Tegra chipset.

Exactly, it's a niche product like the Oculus Rift or the Razer Hydra.

I don't get what point this guy is trying to make. Probably some butthurt AMD fanboy.

U mad that the shield is more irrelevant than the ps vita ? LMAO XD (Sounds like you damage controlling for nvidia, eh ? Cry more clown.

BTW AMD processors = dogshit

Face the facts dude. Nobody wants that garbage shield.

You certainly have the maturity of an AMD fanboy.

Not interested in the shield or any handhelds. Just curious to see why you are taking shots at Nvidia.

Damn someone here is getting defensive. Bwahahahaha.

I'm not taking shots at nvidia. I want to know about the SALES and I thought vgchartz would give me an answer seeing as how I haven't heard too much from nvidia themselves. I'm curious as to why nvidia would make more worthless mobile devices that have almost no relevancy. It's all about dem SALES. We all know that nvidia products are awful in the mobile market and the majortiy agree that it's crap LOL.

Coming from someone who types out their laughter.

Zarx has already been explained to you. Companion device for their graphics cards,  experimental streaming technology etc.

The fact that you are comparing it to the Vita shows how far you are reaching.

There's alot of tears here LOL.

So essentially what your saying is that the nvidia shield is mostly irrelevant if you don't have a kepler graphics card ? Thanks for proving my point.

If it's not a successful gaming/streaming device why bother ? "Niche" is an excuse not a reason. Nvidia has only made more worthless mobile devices.

That's what me and Zarx haave been saying. You are comparing it to the Vita which shows how lost you are.

If you don't understand the concept of "niche" and have such a simplistic view of success then you will never have a successful career in business.

No you'll never understand what a successful business means! People get overly mad of why sales = quality. If no one buys your product then you know it's worthless and does not serve a meaningful purpose just like how people think the vita is irrelevant when it comes to being a protable gaming device. BTW I'm sure the CEOs would probably agree with me instead of you.

Meeting Sales targets is more determinant of success than overall sales. This is why games like Pay Day 2, Etrian Odyssey 4, etc. are considered successes while Resident Evil 6 is considered a failure despite RE6 selling over 10 times those games' sales.  There wasn't that many Shields made in the first place so you can't expect to reach something like the Vita's sales level

That's true however exceeding expectations is even more determinant of a success. See the problem is when you have a huge company like nvidia who throws out the shield to become some meager product we have an issue here because they could have used those resources in developing their graphics architectures more often instead of wasting on a pointless project like the shield. Another issue we have here is that it is not meant to sustain nvidia or do anything meaningful at all. The shield is basically a worthless product because it gives nvidia absolutely NO MORE GROUNDS in the mobile space. The shield has an even more limited market place because it's only available to those unique features who only use the kepler GPU.

The device did exeed expectations, did you miss the part where I said that they SOLD OUT! and that they were ramping up production? There sales expectations for the device were tiny because it was a niche device for a very limited market sold at a premium.

I'm not sure if you would call selling a few thousand units successful either. -_- (For a big company like nvidia I expected a little more.)

So you are saying products have to exeed your completly unrealistic expectations to be considered a success?

OK....

I think we are done here

Because personaly when the CEO of a company says a product is a success I think that means a hell of a lot more than you

Sales have been great. Everything that we shipped so far has sold out and – but we’re just starting to ramp production, we’ve shipped out to our partners only several thousand units, and so it’s still quite early to tell. But we’re expecting to do quite well with Shield,” Huang said during the company’s earnings call.

how could they sell more if they sold out. It isn't a game which you can download relatively easily. it takes physical materials and labor to make it.
