Forums - Gaming - [UPDATE] Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Gets a Live Action Commercial, First Beautiful Shots Shown

Square Enix announced today that Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will get a hybrid Live Action/CG TV commercial to be aired in Japan starting on November the 16th.

The commercial will focus on the “Fight while changing costumes” theme, and the publisher shares three early pictures, that you can enjoy above and below.

I have to say. Normally I’m not a fan of live action commercials for games, but I definitely like this Lightning.

“Fight while changing costumes” theme. Man, I think Square Enix is just completely lost in terms of marketing and game development. I just don't get a sense of leadership, initiative, and focus.

I think their target audience has become young teen girls and dirty old men.

Despite whatever criticism... for other things. The game does look cool to me outside fo the costumes too.

But, I'm glad JRPG's are starting to get more costumes. That's been in western RPG's for years as a standard feature :P.

Xenoblade, and Dark Soul's have have had it. While ofcourse X-2 did. Tales does to varying degrees.

While the quote does sound kind of stupid, the gameplay looks briliant.  It took them three attempts, but they finally are pushing out a game that looks to be of quality, atleast in terms of the gameplay.

The combat system is ATB based, but it's somewhat action style, Demon's Souls esque.  You have multiple different classes and changing classes will change the current costume you have on.  A visual feature, not a gameplay feature, so they probably should have pushed towards the gameplay aspect and maybe worded it like "action RPG where you can change classes in mid combat."

The way the combat plays out is that you multiple classes that can be equipped at once, while the face buttons are your actions .  Each class has its own ATB and while in combat, each of these classes will gain ATB.  Using actions whether it's evade, defend, or attack as that class will use up ATB units, and when one class has low ATB gauge, you can switch to another class.  So the game is trying to keep it action oriented at all times, but give reason to change your class so you're not repeatedly doing the same actions over and over.  Enemy weak against an element, change classes to take advantage of their weakness, and while they might not go down in a single set of spells cast, you can still switch to your other classes and maybe finish the job with those.  Classes that can use status effects or maybe piercing damage, etc.

Final Fantasy 10-2 has a terrible story, but gameplay was the best in any standard Final Fantasy.  The dress sphere system added a large layer of depth to the gameplay, and Lightning Returns looks to be trying to replicate this gameplay style but with a different approach that makes it closer to FInal Fantasy 13's combat system.

The first battle in this video he's not really taking advantage of weaknesses and such.  Showing off the changing of classes within battle.  There's a quest boss at the end which looks better.

It doesn't look anything like Lightning.  That's like saying the alternate DmC Dante costume looks like Dante just because it changes his hair white.

haha you're right. I saw it last night when I was all drained out so probably explains why I thought she looks like her. Great cosplay nonetheless.

I honestly had not problem with the 'gameplay' of FFXIII in so much as the combat. The story and adventurering (or lack thereof) section of FFXIII is what let it down for me. Especially the story in fact.

Well I'm replaying the game, just to completion this time.  On chapter 10 right now.  Read my review on it once it's done.
