Was Scoobes on the right track about it having something to do with the latin phrase 'memento mori', or is it just a reference to the inevitability of death and/or defeat in the game? Or just its difficulty? (kupomogli guessed the Souls games, don't know if you noticed)

No, but I can see how that'd make sense, except that I don't remember FFIX containing any exposed buttocks. But then I didn't play it all the way through (it appears that I should have).

Yep! It was difficult on purpose, I am a tricky bastard... Oh wait... Kupomogli guessed the soul games? Damn He is right XD. Dark souls to be exact! You got the reasoning right though! It's a reference to the inevitability of defeat. Don't matter what you do you will die lots of times in that game xD.
