The fact that it seems so simple (and the fact that nobody else has tried to guess it yet) makes me almost certain that this is some sort of  malicious bluff, and that what I'm about to say is exactly what you want me to say... But since no one else seems to be willing bite the hook for me, Mega Man X?

If you take the square root of the number that appears in the title of this game, subtract from that the number that this game is usually placed at on the final results threads, the result you'll get is equal to the number of major console releases this series had seen outside of Japan up to and including this one.

You said "series", so I'm going to role out Punch-Out!!, Excite Truck, A Boy And His Blob, Bionic Commando, and many other reboots in franchises with only one NES game.

Thus leaving Mega Man 9 as the best answer I can come up with right now.
