'Crazy Taxi'

for the SEGA Dreamcast released in 2000.

'Crazy Taxi' is one of the best open-world games available. Not because you can do everything imaginable, but because it's fun, gives great freedom and does the one thing it's made for perfectly. The game has one true objective, pick up customers with your cab and get them to their destination. Sounds simple enough, but it's not as boring as it would be in real life.

The game is about getting those customers as fast as possible to those destinations. This implies that the player must race through the town taking shortcuts and jumping from rooftop to rooftop. The faster a customer gets to their destination, the more money the player will earn. Extra money is also earned by showing your customers a wild ride. Apparently, the inhabitants of this town appreciate a thrill.

First released in the arcades and later ported to the Dreamcast, 'Crazy Taxi' on consoles still follows arcade rules. Basically, it's about high-score, or, the most money in this case. The game features no 'story' or 'career' modes, but does feature challenge modes. Also, more cabs can be unlocked in the course of the game. At the time it was an original game-concept that was also able to stand the test of time, but sadly to me, the franchise and the open-world games as a whole died a little for me when nothing came along that was better than 'Crazy Taxi'.

#20 Hint:

We've entered the Hall of Fame of video gaming now. Without any one of these games, I'd have lost interest in gaming a long time ago. So here's the hint for #20: One version of this game had a different color in the region where it originally was released.

21 was Battlefield 2.

We're getting to the good stuff now!

Clue for 20: Many think it is the best PS3/360 gen game.  I liked one of its expansion packs more than the actual full game.  Expansion was sold as DLC, a standalone version, and a GOTY collection version.

I was going to say Oblivion but the expansion pack isn't a standalone game, so Red Dead Redemption?

You got it.  Clue for 19:

This game took 6 years to develop and has the best silent protagonist in gaming history.

Half-Life 2

Signature goes here!

Hints:

#20 - "Got a lot of good steel...Gods be praised."

#19 - "AHHH HA... HA... HA... HA... HA... HA... HA!"

#18 - Featured full story modes for two different characters. Considered to be the best in the franchise by most, I disagree.

19 has to be FFX.

Damn, got all 3. Didn't take long.

20. Banjo-Kazooie
Nintendo 64 (1998)
Rare Ltd.

In the days of the PlayStation and Nintendo 64, developers finally had the technology to create their games in a 3D world. And because of that, many wanted to shed the more linear way of creating game worlds and see just how far they could push the boundaries. 3D Platformers were born, with characters like Mario, Spyro, and Banjo leading the way. But we're here to talk about Banjo-Kazooie, and talk about them we shall! Looking back at games like Banjo-Tooie and Donkey Kong 64 makes me appreciate the original BK even more. It's the perfect mix of open world platforming and restrained, focused level design. It offers the correct amount of collectables and how they interact with the world that Banjo-Kazooie find themselves in. It offers an interesting, interactive hub worlds while introducing us to a diverse group of worlds to explore. Even replaying it years later shows what a well put together and plain ol' fun game Banjo-Kazooie is (annoying 5th gen camera controls notwithstanding). I'll always love the bear and bird duo, and wish them the best in the years going forward.

Hint for #19:

Inspired by Europe and the concepts of Creation and Destruction. Also, evil's never been so fabulous!
