Shouldn't be a problem, the PS2 sold another 44 million consoles after the PS3.

I don't think it will.

Yet again, the Ps2 had no competition whatsoever. It crushed the other consoles, and several price cuts after 2005 were the icing on the cake. You can't really say the same about the Ps3.

You're right, but you can also look at the fact the PS2 was cut to $129.99 MSRP over 6 months before the PS3 was released (April 2006) and say the PS3 at $200 (the 12GB SKU no one wants) or $250 have far more room to drop in price. You could also say it only needs 19 million more or so to hit 100 million as opposed to 44 million.

... But then you could also say the PS2 was a full year younger going into its second stage of life at 6 years old where as the PS3 is going into its second stage of life at 7 years old. You also have to factor in the PS3 being much weaker in the beginning where as the PS4 is much stronger right off the bat, which might end up eating into the PS3's tail-end sales more than the PS3 ate into the PS2's tail-end sales.

That's what makes this all interesting to me, as there's multiple ways to look at things.

They had to sell PS2s in the same outlets that sold PS3s, 360s, and Wiis, did they not? The fact that PS3 still manages a 400k week during the holidays WITHOUT a price cut, I really only see this as a question of when will it reach 100 million. Has Sony recently announced they're going to drop PS3 support and hault production or something? Stop shipping them in 2015? Unless we hear something like that, I don't see why 100 million is so hard to imagine.

Furthermore, the software support is definitely there; Lightning Returns, DBZ: Battle of Z, Drakengard 3, Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2, Tales of Symphonia Chronicles are all coming early this year. Not to mention, the annual COD,Madden, Fifa, etc probably won't stop releasing for a couple more years. Give the PS3 a super duper slim version, a couple of price cuts, and 100 million isn't quite the stretch all the nay-sayers would have everyone believe. What's the PS3 at right now, anyway? 81 million?

it's gonna have to be on the back of Europe because the sales in Japan are awful and PS4 isn't even out for a while yet. Sales in the US have fallen very quickly, if it's gonna get 100 million it will have to be from massive sales in other places.
The thing people are forgetting is that last gen was just so much longer than usual so we probably aren't gonna see a normal slower tapering off we have seen in following 5 year gens. We have already seen the start of what looks like sales dying pretty quickly, although Europe seems to be holding up better. For me it's a clear cut case in Japan, and the evidence is pointing to the in the US also.
Last year during this week in Japan wii had about the same sales as ps3 does now if that gives you some idea of how bad it might drop next year in Japan, wii sold 2k that week this year, a 90% drop.

the more i think about it the less likely it seems, the PS3 isn't gonna have a really low price like the PS2, and the PS4 is much more competitively priced than the PS3 was. A successful PS4 is gonna hurt PS3 sales pretty badly i think.

I'll take a wait and see approach but i suspect PS3 is gonna die pretty fast except in Europe.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Nope.

Could be possible. I sure hope that it passes the Wii. At the end of Gen 8 I want to see nothing but Playstation in the Top 4 home consoles :)
