Forums - Microsoft - Unity free to inide devs on xbox one

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/11/05/unity-will-be-free-for-indie-developers-on-xbox-one

In an effort to provide more avenues for independent developers on its new console, Microsoft announced that the Unity add-on will be free for any registered indie developers in the Independent Developers @Xbox program.

The add-on, releasing in 2014 for the Xbox One, will allow registered developers to use the Unity game engine to publish titles on the new console, as well as Windows 8 and Windows 8 devices. Microsoft says this will level the playing field for developers, regardless of their size or location.

Xbox One-only Unity Pro licenses will also be offered to qualified developers. Microsoft has already promised to be on the lookout for promising titles that deserve marketing and promotion, but offering Unity free to any developer willing to register is another step in the effort to bring original content to next-gen platforms.

"Microsoft continues to show their commitment to creating opportunity for developers of all shapes and sizes, a commitment shared by Unity," Unity Technologies CEO David Helgason said. "The drive behind the ID@Xbox program is exciting for Unity and the games development community in general. We can’t wait to see the results.”

The ID@Xbox program, announced at Gamescom this year, aims to make development and publishing friendlier than they were on Xbox 360, and as appealing as they are on the PlayStation 4 and Wii U; with more and more developers using the Unity engine, this new approach could open up myriad avenues for creative developers.

Kudos to Microsoft. I might release my game (its not ready) one day at XBLA. But its a long way to go.

I wanted to make a simple platforming game (using game maker) in ios / android long ago. But I just dont have the time to do it. Plus I have started a job again. My less time became lesser. But me and my friend has a plan to make a game in future.

Cool, Nintendo did it first, good (for indies)to see MS following !

Nice. I'm working with Unity on a Tower Defense right now. While the project is still very young it will be interesting to look forward for the Xbox One and it might be really nice to implement some SmartGlass feature in my project.

Very strange wording. There are two versions, Unity (free) and Unity Pro ($1500).
Let's just summarize:
a) Unity has always been free for developers.
b) The wording does NOT say you get Unity Pro for free
c) Ms talks about an "Addon", NOT Unity Pro
So what do you get for free now?

You have unity free, unity pro for a grand, and unity super expensive why not buy a new car instead pro home console add on. Developing for home consoles with Unity has traditionally cost A LOT more than people assume. That add on for XBONE is essentially free.
