Just to follow on yesterday's convo, Prime 2 (Trilogy version) does feature similar real time environment lighting by the Charge Beam travelling blast. It's a bit hard to notice on the bright scenarios of Aether, but on Dark Aether it's pretty noticeable.

Just did a comparison between charged shots on Phazon Mines and in Dark Agon Wastes and both effects are pretty noticeable, Prime does look a bit more bloomy than Prime 2.

Yeah I noticed something vaguely similar when I replayed the games not long back. What amazed me the most though is just how well they stand up, despite being, what, over 10 years old?

Indeed, 12 and 10 years respectively. Both Prime games stretched the capacities of the GC at the time so they were hardly topped by anything Gen 6 had to offer, console wise. Heck, even the leap to Prime 3 didn't bring that much difference in the graphical department (though that was probably because of it being an early gen game).

The Prime engine is a beast, probably one of the most solid and consistent engines nowadays, given that they're still using it for Tropical Freeze and that game looks amazing with the upgraded shaders and improved textures and lighting.

Would love to see a new Metroid in that engine on the Wii U.

Very true, I'm amazed what the little cube could do really.

As for that last part...where is our Nintendo Direct again?

I'm sure as hell not pleasingly understanding.
I'm hungry for moar directs.

If I had to make an honest guess about the Metroid Prime Trilogy thing, it would be space issues on the disc.

The original Metroid Prime was about 1.2 GB, barely fitting on the GameCube disc. Metroid Prime 2 was about the same size. Metroid Prime 3 was about 4.4 GB. In total, that's about 6.8 GB. If you assume that the first two games need to be adjusted to account for being on a new platform with a different native resolution and may also have a new control scheme, it may be easier to just write new data on top of the old games instead of completely rewriting the existing code. So between that and the few new things included in the Trilogy, that could be another 1 GB. That's 7.8 GB in total.

The standard Wii disc only held 4.7 GB of data.

In order to fit the entire trilogy on a single disc, Retro must have used a double-layer disc, something that the Wii probably isn't designed to work well with. And even then, I don't think dual-layer DVD's can actually hold twice as much info, only about 70% more or something.

So 4.7 times 1.7 is about 8 GB... barely enough room to contain the entire trilogy.

tl;dr The Wii hardware wasn't the problem, disc size probably was.

I thought Trilogy was on a DL DVD, so disk space should be just enough.

Indeed it was on a DL-DVD.

After digging around a bit more on the interwebz, it seems that the differences between Prime and Prime 2 Trilogy versions are mostly due to the removel of some effects that were only present in the EU version of Prime GC and some less-than-optimal coding that the original Prime had (such as water and sand effects being on separate layers instead of affecting the poly count directly) which were removed to keep consistency across the board.

Still didn't find any explanation between the aliasing difference for both Prime and Prime 2 Trilogy versions, which to me it's the most glaring difference.

I'd rather they spread the Directs around and have them full of bombshells rather than last year when it was basically just a  monthly trailer show for games we already know about.

Just a question: When is that poll gonna be updated?

By now, everyone in this site has voted for the last option and keeping the poll alive will only attract the trolls to it. It's funny how it shifted from having less than 30 votes in the first weeks to over 200 in just a few days, and no one even deigned to leave a simple comment to justify voting that option.

Anonymus hit-and-run internet tactics AHOY!

Tonight is the correct answer, though if someone has an idea for a poll then Im happy to us it.
