The wall jump is perfect.  It is difficult.  It requires patience, timing, skill.  It is an ability that you have from the moment you turn the game on.  It's something the game never tells you how to do.  And it opens up the possibility for more sequence breaks than any "glitch" ever could.  In my opinion this is not bad game design or bad control...it is genius, and never gets done in modern game design.  Most games now will just hold your hand and give you all the keys.  Can it be frustrating?  Absolutely.  Is it rewarding to finally "get it"...yep.  There are even folks who can basically slither up the side of one wall. Now that's talent.
