Yes, they don't and look where it got them... A "failed" console and a handheld that won't even sell half as much as the DS ^ Heres the thing... If they don't try to compete, they will exit the console market period which = a huge loss in revenue and a source of income which I doubt they are willing to give up. They gotten away without competing during the wii/DS days cause those sold like free sex but now, the casuals are gone and the people that buy gaming consoles want to buy a console that has great third party games and if Nintendo doesn't make a third party friendly console and convinse the third parties to develop on their platform, then people will simply not buy their console. Its as simple as that because third party games are popular whether we like it or not. Its hardly even doing much to compete, all they are doing is making a console that is thrid party friendly and paying some big ones like Rockstar to port GTA on their system. Not make it exclusive, just port... And any short comings of graphics and timed exclusives will be nullified by Nintendo's own IPs. It really isn't that hard And if it ain't coming, then Nintendo will simply exit the console market all together which I doubt they will or they want to so they should make it third party friendly. You are right about one thing, times have changed but they changed because the influence of third parties have gotten so strong and Nintendo needs to adapt to exactly that. And if Nintendo doesn't give a shit about the press, then they better start or else sell significantly less consoles and handhelds each generation |
I don't even think there's that many generations left for "dedicated home console" hardware.
There will be a Playstation 5 and Nintendo NX and probably an XBox 4 ... but after that? I'm not so sure there will even be a phyiscal Playstation 6.
By then streaming services like PSNow will be well past their baby steps phase and likely able to deliver high end games via the internet.
Your home tablet will be capable of powering graphics probably even beyond that of the PS4 and beaming them wirelessly to the TV or any display in your house.
Maybe Nintendo saw the writing on the wall, and are broadening out now. NX doesn't have to carry the company, it would be nice if it did of course, but Nintendo will branch out and ensure that it doesn't have to. So yes even in your "nightmare" scenario where lets it sells "only" 65 million, Nintendo can make plenty of money all around still and millions of kids growing up will still get exposed to Mario, Pikachu, DK, Link, etc. It may just have to start on an iPad is all.
I think Nintendo is kinda going to become more like Marvel and LEGO ... at one time those companies relied strictly basically on the sales of comic books and toy blocks to drive all their business. Today it's one part of their business and they branched their brand into many more mass market ways. I haven't bought a comic book in 10 years, but I'm still a regular customer for Marvel because I go see their movies.
My nephews know and love the LEGO brand even though they don't actually own any LEGO. They watch the LEGO movie like once a week and they've been to LEGO Land.
