Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo experience 100% Year-over-Year growth in Digital sales for first half of Fiscal Year 2014

"This graph shows the transitions of download sales until the last fiscal year. The sales slowed in the fiscal years ended in March 2011 and 2012. As I told you at the Financial Results Briefing in April, however, the sales in the last fiscal year more than doubled those of the previous year and were our highest ever. The download sales in the first half of this fiscal year reached 11.4 billion yen, which is more than double the figure in the first half of the previous year and surpassed that of the second half. Digital download sales of packaged software represented about the half of the download sales, but the other types of digital sales have also risen steadily.

  • We have provided various methods of micropayment for enriched download-only games and services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, whose Internet-connection ratios are significantly higher than our previous platforms.
  • And we have provided a means for our consumers to periodically source information about games through Nintendo eShop, as shown by the fact that it is now the most popular way to watch Nintendo Direct videos.
  • In addition, we have expanded our range of payment methods, including POSA cards on retailers' shelves.

As a result of the efforts we have made over the last two years, we are confident that our digital business has finally entered a phase of expansion."

Not too shabby. Will be interesting to see digital sales for second half of the fiscal year.

On the second half it should get even higher, with Pokémon, Zelda, Mario and the Holiday season.

Animal Crossing has helped their eshop sales a lot. About 20% of the total sales have come from the eshop ( http://www.joystiq.com/2013/07/18/animal-crossing-new-leaf-sales-surpass-500k-in-june/ ) during NA launch. AC:NL is now at 6.35m ( http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-10-31-animal-crossing-new-leaf-sells-6-35-million ) while VGC has it at 5.04m (physical sales). So it seems about right that is still managing 20% of overall sales considering 6.35 x .2 = 1.27 (1.27 + 5.04 = 6.31).

At least in Latin America, almost everyone I know buys games digitally (3DS, Wii U, PS3, PC, whatever). Might not be huge numbers but they are something. Add the the numbers in the U.S, Canada and Europe and you have big percentages.

The only retail games I bought for 3DS on the eshop are NSMB2 (Club Nintendo coin promotion during launch) and AC:NL (game seemed perfect to always have on system).  I prefer physical games for my game collection but eshop sales will only continue to rise in the foreseeable future.

just like Reggie said before, their digital sales are rising, by a big margain. now if only they could add in a proper account system, maybe i'd buy more digital stuff then. oh, and please put Kid Icarus Uprising on the eShop, it's sold out everywhere T-T

That's good news.
With Nintendo putting more of an emphasis on digital lately, that's how it should be.

I wish they'd start adding Wii titles to the eShop. *cough*Xenoblade*cough*

I'm buy both digital 3DS and retail 3DS depending on the game. If it's just for me, I buy digital. If it's a game the whole family might play, I buy retail. Though with Wii U, it's more digital overall.
