Forums - Sony - Sony's Q2 FY2013 Earnings (PS3 2m / PSPVita 800k / ~$200m Loss)

Not what I was hoping for. Not a massive loss for the gaming division is alright I guess. Next quarter will be, though?

Good PS3 shipments. Shame about the muddling of PSP & Vita.

Interesting that Sony Pictures basically killed the whole table..Next quarter might basically show how the PS4 R&D, manufacturing and inventory costs were handled. And I don't want to sound too pessimistic, but can someone change the (probably heavily) overtracked PS3 sales numbers finally? (We have <= 80m shipped and <=80m sold end of fq2...)?

@Seece

It´s a 2% issue from who is behind or not. I think it´s by now irrelevant.

Sony needs to make money with each PS3 still working they need to suport the system further than Microsoft will push the 360.

I will get shredded for this, but there is a chance 360 is still ahead.

Very creative, if not desperate math to keep XBox360 ahead. Look, it is very simple:

PS3 sales up to Oc1,2013: 83.5mio - FY12 PS2 sales.

So in order to sell less than XBox360, Sony would have had to sell more than 4.1mio PS2s. 4.1mio was total sales of PS2 in FY11, into a market that was crumbling fast (FY09: 7.3mio, FY10 6.4mio, FY11 4.1mio). I think a good estimate for FY12 shipments would be anywhere from 2m (pessimist) to 3.5m (optimist) given the rapid market shrinking. (And yes, the PS3 is overtracked here but that is another discussion)

So you're going on record to say Sony smashed their FY target and being up YOY last year despite ... actually being down each quarter in Japan, EU and US. That's what you're saying, and you have no proof. Okay.

What I said made use of the infomation they had and assumed Sony hit their FY target.

You described what you're doing perfectly, creative maths. Not using logic :)

Not that being down in JP, EU and US means anything. As proof, PS2 was down in JP, EU and US, yet it apparently was up YOY?

PS2 was practically discontinued in all those regions ages ago.

They will probably "bundle" the Vite TV numbers with the PSP/Vita numbers to reach that 5M sale xD

No doubt about Vita TV going to be combined with regular Vita sales, but Vita TV isn't going to add much to the tally. I expect sales on the same level as the PSP go, or worse. It's also Japan-only for the time being.

No way. PSP Go took several months to sell its first shipment!

That's bad for Sony. A loss and and a much lower profit outloook is not good at all. I thought they'd at least make a profit this quarter since the exchange rate was still favorable.
The Playstation division did OK. I guess the PS4 and PS Vita might have caused it to make a loss again.

Surprised the mobile division continues to make loses. Last year they had the Xperia Z which should have really helped make the division profitable, but other than that, there haven't been any big phones from Sony so I expect this division to continue making loses.

See, this is why you'll hear me forever ripping the console wars. Bashing other consoles to make people not want them, ripping the other companies to make people not want to support their products and services ... people are being IDIOTS by not realizing what's happening right before their eyes: Nintendo is not making money from gaming, Sony is not making money from gaming and MS is (for now). This isn't about people leaving Nintendo or Sony for MS, this is about them LEAVING.

We need to support GAMING. Wii U has some awesome looking titles coming (finally). The PS4 looks to be a return to form for Sony. The Xbox One looks to push what gaming consoles are while presenting some awesome games as well. Wouldn't it be better for the INDUSTRY if we all start pushing for people to get as many of the consoles as possible instead of making each of them respectively look like they're not worth purchasing?

TL/DR: Grow up and help save console gaming instead of being a cancer.

People do. GTA5 pretty much paid for PS4 R&D in the second quarter....

Then why was it up YOY?

The same argument could be made for PS3 sales

Because of Q1. Unless you think PS3 sold the majority of those 3.4m which would just be ridiculous. Sony are still shipping PS2's (I think Ethomaz said something like that?) Sony have simply tallied PS2 and put all those systems in Q1 so they won't be counted in any future quarers regardless of what they're still sending out.

I forgot to add, amazing Vita numbers considering, over double WiiU numbers this quarter ...

Given they both seem to be in a similar state it's an interesting comparison.

Shipments =/= sales. WiiU was massively overshipped in Nintendo Q4 2012. And since it was selling very poorly, the stock was never really moving hence why the very low shipment numbers. Let's also not forget that vita is on it's 2nd year so it was definetly not overshipped. So no, the comparison is pretty irrevelant. If wiiU would hypothetically stay on vita sale levels in 2014, then we would see quarterly shipments of around 800k since it wouldn't be overshipped unless retailers are complete idiots lol.

Predictions for LT console sales:

PS4: 120M

XB1: 70M

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

Well it's PSP + Vita anyway so it was an invalid comparison in the first place, Rol corrected me.

Still, WiiU is doing under 100k a month this past quarter (Actual sales), so no it wouldn't be shipping 800k.
