Forums - Microsoft - Albert Penello talks about the UI video and all the crazy rumours (Basically they're overblown and BS)

LOL I LUVVVVV how people know all about PR and think it is mostly wind to hide the truth.... people live in fear of being fooled and think everybody with power is out to get them or lie to them... (like union workers think corporate is out to get them and rape them)... I guess it's human nature... For being in the communication/advertising/PR field for more than a decade whether as a student or a professional, this is vastly false, but hey who am I kidding I ain't CumBOAT nobody will believe me and in all honesty that fear of the masses works in our favor most of the time, it is easier to harness...

I can't remember anyone here claiming that PR is about "hiding the truth". As you must know if you work in that field, PR is one form of propaganda, and propaganda is about influencing/manipulating attitudes/opinions in a certain direction - usually by communicating only certain aspects of "the truth". So it's not about hiding the truth, it's about trying to focus people's attention to only certain parts of the truth. Which is exactly what Penello is doing here.

BTW, I must say I'm a bit surprised that you work in that field. I never thought you don't come across as a professional PR guy.

lol because I'm not a PR guy... I actually hate doing PR, it is the least interesting part of my field to me (don't get me wrong it is a fascinating art, and a very difficult job with lots of responsibilities and egg shells to step on... it's just not for me, I'm way too hot headed for that)

at least it is not the main focus of my work, currently I am mostly into marketing, product management, communication.... but it always involves a little bit of PR... and I'm not doing it in English either :) but that will come to an end soon (if everything goes to plan) I will be a happy business owner next year :D

well on your answer I still vastly disagree, the main role of PR is informative and to keep good relation with the customers.

propaganda is the darkest part of PR and while you are right it is used by companies in that form this is more the exception on very specific occasions or to do damage control (and I'm not talking about XB OS quality kind of damage control but more like BP oil spill kind of damage control)

every time I had to deal with PR I basically just talked about the product and its qualities without any bias or any intention beside being informative on the strength of the product.... of course I'm not gonna talk about the weakness, but that's hardly a PR tactic, it is just logic... now Q&A are usually part of the PR work and in those you usually don't have the choice if something doesn't work you have to say it eventually otherwise the damage you cause is usually bigger than what you can gain temporary by lying...

so yeah when Penello says something I'm incline to believe what he is saying more than any rumors from non official sources... in other words I will always take a PR guy more seriously than anyone else, even though some might bend the truth a little they are usual far more on the spot than anyone else. and yeah PR guys fuck up sometimes and penello did and it is not surprising, I use to work in marketing for a chemical company before and countless of times I announced stuff directly from the R&D PhDs to my clients to have to come back a week later on it because those morons (yeah R&D PhDs are morons when it comes to run a business) realized they messed up a test or couldn't stay on schedule for X or Y reason.... so yeah Penello is probably saying what he gets as he gets it but sometimes it changes from under his feet and can't do shit about it beside looking like a liar or a fool....

But he didn't comment on the CODgate 720p drama, most rumours are BS but that one still left me with doubts

or maybe he did not mention it because true or not, the only people who seem to care are the PS4 fans (like you) and make a big drama out of it?
I prefer him to spend time on what I care, sorry if it does not interrest you :)

So you don't care that you are paying a $100 more for a less powerful product? I don't think you can talk for all xbone fans anyway you don't care about it but others do.

I think the majority of the Xbox fans do not care :) Funny how you, a PS4 fan seem to really care and know what Xbox fans want and need... I think that between the 2 of us; I have a bit more insight on what is appealing in the Xbox One for Xbox fans than you...

I do not care paying 100$ more for a better overall product in my point of view (and a lot of others like the pre-orders are showing). You seem to focus only on TF which is okay, and I respect that but stop pretending that you know which product is better for everyone; you actually seem to have no clue :)

well I shouldn't have said I vastly disagree... it's more I wouldn't call it propaganda, this is more the role of marketing than PR.... PR being more the honest guy talking about what is true about his product or service... while marketing actively look for trends/habits/social bias etc to formulate a communication message that will tickle the customer in places he didn't know existed.... while it is neither propaganda it is a way more oriented form of communication for a company than PR is in most cases... well at least for most of them... of course you have always the black sheep in the lot

yeap, everything else kept equal, they could have come up with PS4 with a haswell i7 core processor and a titan GPU with 16GB of RAM I would have still taken an XB for everything else it is putting on the table....

now at 400 bucks that would be a very good PC gaming rig alternative for the PS4 but once again if I'm interested into high end specs for gaming mostly I would get a high end PC not a console.... the XB is providing me with something more than the PS4 when it comes to what I expect from a living room console.... so yeah the 100 bucks more are well spent for me... a little bit like apple customers spend way more money for something usually less powerfull than other offers at a cheaper price, what they buy is not spec it is something that suites more their tastes and needs and are willing to pay extra for it... whether it makes sense to me or not is irrelevant to them (yeah I don't get them, cause it's is not a 100 bucks more in those cases) this is the same I don't expect a PS fan to understand... otherwise he wouldn't be buying a PS4 only...

Fans do care not everyone wants kinect or like paying more for inferior hardware. A lot of users changed sides to the PS4, pre-orders numbers (if they are correct) show PS4 is still ahead in USA, yea Sony is taking back the biggest xbox market.

I don't pay more for inferior hardware... I pay more for features that suite me better... once again power has not much value in console war except for braging rights in both case they are pretty poor hardware wise for the price they cost anyway... if it's really hardware power you are looking for for a good price, you certainly don't buy neither a PS4 nor a XB1 if you kow anything about hardware (not saying you don't, but if someone is really looking for that the 100 price difference on low level hardware shouldn't be a decisive point)

and what pre order win ??? both console are sold out almost everywhere, the winner is only the one with the biggest production at the moment... what are you talking about??? numbers from 2 months+++ ago in the middle of the 180 ???

After reading this, it makes me so so happy to be a Microsoft fan. I really dont want to be a fan of Sony. And be associated with those on Neogaf or the like. Its destroying the industry. You go on Neogaf and it makes you want to be a casual gamer. To laugh at them. To laugh at the desperation that those fans go to. So much desperation, that they now ABSOLUTELY LOVE First Person shooters and Arcade racing games.

This has to be one of these most impressive Corporate answers Ive ever seen in the games industry. I wonder how many developers and publishers are laughing at those online who think they know more than they do?

Its really really bad for the core gamer online. You dont get so much bad rumours for example in Formula 1. And that sport is considered one of the most elusive in terms of rumours.

What will the industry be like in 10 years?
