Here is the trap in which I fell when I played Wii Party in Board Game Island mode, contrary to Mario Party your performance on mini games is not really rewarded and has practically no influence on the course of the game. This is more in the spirit of a board game. I fear many reviewers have fallen in this trap and have remained on the bad impression...

Party games are generally never "critical darlings", and are typically released to provide some shallow multiplayer fun. I'm not downplaying the game, since with a group of friends party games tend to be very fun. It's just not very deep, so I'm not surprised its getting pretty modest scores.
