Forums - Sony - PS4 Hard Drive Replacement

Out of those of us getting PS4s at launch, how many are upgrading the hard drive out of the box?  If so, what are you putting in there?

I'm considering a 1TB SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive), but I wanted to get thoughts from others.

i intend to. 2TB is my goal (not SSD cause i'm not millionare).

i gave my pre-order to my cousin recently and he payed me back the money i spent, so i'm not exactly getting a PS4 at launch, but he's putting in a 2 TB HDD

SSHD or is he just getting a standard 2.5" SATA drive @ 7200 RPM?

I'm specifically interested in whether anybody has seen the SSHDs as being worth it.

I will wait for reviews to see if it actually makes a difference. The tests with the PS3 showed it didn't matter if it was an SSD or not, so it's worth waiting to see if that changes with the PS4.

I was thinking the same thing, though the backup/restore process is kind of a pain, so I was hoping to just do it at launch.  I guess I won't have a ton of data on there between now and the middle of next year...maybe I will wait.  Let others be the beta testers for once.

Is it bad? I've never done it. I was planning to move the PS4 drive to my PS3 and get a big (maybe SSD) one for the PS4, but only after I've seen reviews.

just a standard one. he doesn't think SSDs/SSHDs are worth the money and neither do i for that matter, i doubt they would increase loading times a lot in a console.

On PS3 if you have a lot of data it takes a pretty long time to backup and restore.  The physical replacement process is super easy though.  SSDs are far too expensive to be worth it for a size bump in the PS3 or PS4, though if SSHDs show a performance bump you get the best of both worlds with speed and affordability.

I'd rather not go with a Seagate so I'm waiting for Western Digital's drives to be on the market for awhile I guess.

I don't intent to (so far I'm not even having concrete plans for buying), but if I'd do, I think I'd also buy a SSHD.

That way, one gets the best of both worlds, and the price is just a little higher than a same capacity HDD.
