Sell it. PS4's are already going for ~$700 on ebay.

All of this, of course, is just my opinion.

Skyrim 100%'d. Dark Souls 100%'d.
Dark Souls > Skyrim.
Halo 4 is the best damn FPS since Halo 3.
Proud pre-orderer of 2 PS4's and an Xbox One.

Currently Playing: Dark Souls II, South Park

Yeah, if I lost my job and had no immediate way of getting money, I'd sell every non-essential thing I owned. It's not like the systems won't be around for another decade or so. Hopefully, your brother finds something soon though.

Yeah, it really sucks.  He just took his wife and kids on a vacation that he spent a chunk of money on a month ago.  He really wishes he had any idea things could go this way.  He applied for like 15  different jobs this week.

Not to criticize your brother, but it is recommended to save up to 6 months of your living expenses in case such a situation happens or for other emergencies.

If he is in this big of a need for cash that he'd have to immediately sell already paid off (I assume) consoles, then it sounds like that vacation expense and the console pre-orders themselves should have gone to savings to begin with. Again, if I am making a judgement without the full picture I am sorry. I am not trying to criticize, just offer my financial advice.

Also, I have 3 Xbox One's pre-ordered and 2 PS4's so I am hoping to sell them for double as well and basically completely pay for my console(s) (If I keep a PS4) plus online services and games for a good year or more.

A lot easier said than done in regards to saving up for 6 months of living expenses though.

That said, if it were me, those pre-orders would be held onto, then paid off and around late November the would be sold.

That's true. And I can understand people living paycheck to paycheck it may not be an option to save much. But this guy had $1000 in game consoles preordered plus a family vacation. If he had no savings, those should have gone to it.

Can't argue against that.

Just a shame his job didn't keep their employees in the know.

My job for example, every month we have a meeting with the entire company to explain "The state of the company". It gives us all a good idea of where we are going and what challenges lie ahead. If only most companies would be so transparent with their employees.

He's not a check to check guy, but he is being smart.  Instead of draining his savings on convenience purchases(consoles) I told him to sell them.  I know he told me that he was set to get a $20,000 performance bonus for the project he was working on in December.  The owners of the company were hoping to get an investor to save the company.  It didn't pan out and they closed the company on a tuesday afternoon, no warning.

I know someone with a similar situation except he just bought a house and instead of buying and selling them he just canceled his pre-orders.

I think selling your launch systems for inflated prices is pretty crappy. On the one hand I think, "If some idiot's willing to pay that much money, it's their own fault." But then you've got to think about how for every system you buy and sell for profit, there's a guy at the bottom of the ladder who wanted a system and didn't get one. For every pre-order someone nabs, there's someone out there who missed out, or who has to pay a ton of money for a system rather than MSRP. Just a crummy thing to do, in my opinion. It would be nice if you could just go out and buy a system rather than having to fight these scammers for them.

Not that I'm saying every person who re-sells is a scammer.  This situation is a bit more complicated.

No one who resells a system is a scammer. Unless they sell one and never deliver. The case could be made its crappy he lost his job in the first place. If he has a next gen system or two and there are none to be had through the normal retail outlets anyone wishing to buy one better be prepared to pay a premium for them.

Whats crummier selling something that is rare for a higher price or simply keeping them and not selling them at all? There is only one scenario there which prevents another person who hadn't preordered, from owning a PS4/XB1 at launch day, and it isn't the one in which the original purchasers keep theirs.

"Scammer" isn't the right word, but I couldn't think of a better one.  But "crappy" is a perfect word for a person who buys a system just to sell it at a higher price.
