Forums - Gaming - Rumor: Capcom Europe to lay off more than half its staff

Capcom's European branch is to lay off over half its workforce following restructuring, according to MCV who "understands more than half of the European arm faces redundancy, with a number of jobs set to merge."

Both MCV and GamesIndustry International confirmed with Capcom that its European arm is facing a restructuring process similar to that endured by the American team in the summer. The Capcom US layoffs saw several employees lose their jobs, including former senior VP of planning and business development Christian Svensson.

Capcom provided the following statement: "Following a restructure at its US operation, Capcom's European organization is currently evaluating its structure to ensure it is in the best position to take advantage of the changing market conditions the industry is facing."

It's unknown how many employees are based at Capcom's European offices, although Capcom reported a global employee count of 2,476 as of March 2013.

MCV's report follows Capcom announcing a special loss of $73 million earlier this year due to game cancellations, some of the blame landing at the foot of overseas teams apparently providing poorer quality due to "excessive" outsourcing. Capcom said it wants marketing and development divisions to be better in sync overseas, its western teams suffering from "insufficient coordination."

It sucks, but looks like over 1000 people are going to lose their jobs, in addition to the large lay off that's happened earlier in the US.  Lay offs happen, dev studios close down.  There won't be any bitching about this though since it's not EA, so I wanted to post it and point that out.  I even made(edited) a picture.

Nintendo could step and buy them.

Capcom's value as a publisher, even compared to other publishers, is that they have an effective presence across all corners of the industry (including eternally neglected points like Nintendo home platforms and the Arcades), which would diminish drastically.

Or did you mean Capcom Europe? Which may be a better idea, to give NoE something to do other than have their boss posing as Phoenix Wright.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Focusing majority of their effort for DLC and rehashing indicates that top capcom executives are not gamers. They just keeps taking wrong decisions one after another. If a companies top executives doesnt posses any idea about the products or services they produce how come they will survive?

To be honest I am not too well informed xD. What I mean is that if Capcom was ever in trouble, someone could step up and buy them! (If the situation was really really bad). The idea of Capcom Europe also seems good.

Still all this layoffs are horrible. I hope the people who lost their jobs can find another one

That's what happens when you release games that people do NOT want. Even with so much DLC and rereleases of rereleases, Capcom fails. That company has severe problems.

.. Now they can focus on their Mobile future like their Japan divisionist already has..

I wonder what this 8th generation has in store for 3rd parties in regards to bankruptcy/mergers/etc....will we see a major 3rd party go away, like what happened to THQ?

capcom only has them selfs to blame for their problems

You bet.

And I suspect Capcom might be the one to go first, it certainly won't be EA or Activision to bite the bullet.
