..and WiiU.

I wouldn't blame Rockstar if they would wait a year to release a Wii U version. By then, despite being late, it'll have a much bigger shot of selling a million copies or more.

WaW sales was simply the market telling Activision that they dont want to play anymore World War 2 era shooters anymore, they wanted more of that MW stuff. Dont know why people keep telling me about revunue and GTA and all that. Has nothing to do with Ghosts sales, ive yet to see a reason why people think Ghosts will do BETTER than Blops2

This was more of a response to the rest of the thread saying that GTA 5 was bigger than CoD, hence the revenue talk. As for Ghosts, it's made by Infinity Ward, not Treyarch. IW has a bigger fanbase than Treyarch does by quite a bit. Ghosts most likely won't beat GTA 5's opening record but it should end very close in sales. Don't know why everyone keeps saying CoD's on a decline just because one game doesn't break records like it has in the past or outsell its prequel. Sometimes sequels don't sell as well as usual but that doesn't mean that the franchise is "automatically" on a decline.

IMO once the marketing machine kicks into high gear, Ghosts will start impressing in the preorder charts.

by that logic Blops should have never outsold MW2 but it did. Preorders are already tracking less than BLOP2 did last year at the same time. I dont see ads making it better since its not like its going to get more ads than usual. Its on a decline because the numbers say they are, but we'll find out soon enough.

I'm pretty certain activision said they expect a decline for Ghosts too.

Actually its the opposite, they are expecting the biggest sales yet according to the head guy at IW. He said that during Gamescom or the Xbox One reveal, can't remember. And this is the company that expected MW3 to sell less than BO.

that was months ago, at the Xone reveal, the last thing they said is they expected a sales decline that was weeks ago, you must have missed that. Treyarch never rides the wave, Blops1 was the only Treyarch game that actually outsold a IW game previous. (COD3 released on 2 more platforms) We're gonna have to agree to disagree, im willing to bet Ghosts wont outsell Blops2 as most of the people playing these dont really care about the changes that you seem to believe caused Blops2 to sell less than MW3

It just goes to show you how big gaming has gotten. While a game selling a million copies isn't a big deal anymore, at one point it was considered exceptional, but now it's commonplace. Back in the early 90s, Super Mario Bros. 3 became the first non-bundled game ever to breach 10 million copies sold, and it did so by a wide margin, selling 18 million copies. It was another few years before another non-bundled game would sell over 10 million copies, that game being Super Mario 64 (Gran Turismo would also go on to sell over 10 million). But SMB3's status as best-selling game ever wasn't beaten until GTA: San Andreas, which was the first game released that would go on to sell over 20 million copies. GTA3, GTA: Vice City, and Gran Turismo 3 & 4 all sold over 10 million copies as well. But this generation saw a huge increase in the number of games that sold over 10 million copies, as well as several games that have sold over 20 million, and the first non-bundled title to sell over 30 million: Mario Kart Wii. Now GTA5 looks like it might go on to be the second game to sell over 30 million, and could become the new all-time best-seller. We've gone from 500 million NES cartridges to some 2-½ billion discs sold combined between the Wii, PS3, and 360. That's huge.

An excellent and informative post.

Your right, if MW never released and IW never made a CoD then BO still would have broken the record right? /sarcasm.

It was MW that started the insane FPS surge, its why BO1+2 sold incredibly well; its why BF3 sold so well. Without MW or IW the FPS market wouldn't be what it is today but like you said we'll just have to disagree on that. As for the BO2 problems, when you have 40 million or so active CoD players and a small fraction doesn't enjoy BO2 due to the reasons previously stated then yeah it will affect overall sales quite a bit. Alot of complaints came out of BO2, as is well known, and CoD has a huge following so a little to CoD is actually alot to every other franchise, hence the couple million less active users on BO2.

But I don't know. The more I think about it the more I tend to lean towards Ghosts not outselling GTA 5 but I definitely think Ghosts will outsell BO2. But at the end of the day it depends on the final product and how well the consumers like it. IW has always sold more than their previous titles due to loyalty and addicting challenges and competitive community. It soaks up more people then you'd think, and it does it fast.

You said Treyarch never rides the waves. What I meant by riding the wave was Treyarch took on the same approach as IW with CoD all the while relying on the MW fanbase to push its sales beyond what it could without MW. Treyarch's BO wouldn't have seen sales like it had without MW. IW is the pioneer of CoD and have yet to fail to increase their online community with every release. You could look at current preorders and say otherwise, because how it looks right now judging by just numbers Ghosts will sell less than BO2. But I'm also going to take into consideration the absolutely huge marketing campaign that will take place within a month or so. People don't see it but I can almost guarantee that preorders are going to increase exponentially.

Sorry if I'm rambling on I'm just putting in my two cents.

^^fair enough, i just dont agree i dont think as much people know the distinction between a IW COD and a Treyarch one so IMHO that holds no bearing, but im willing to bet one month sig control that Ghosts doesnt past Blops2 and sure as hell wont pass MW3

Amazing

Sure, why not. I'll take the bet. Never had a bet on VGChartz before so might as well. What's the guideline for sales? Are we talking first week, first month or LT?

Mark my words when I say no game on the 3DS or WiiU will beat GTA5's first week sales.
