The Xbox One is not designed to function when vertical, says Microsoft senior director of product management and planning for Xbox Albert Panello.

Whilst the Xbox 360's disc drive tray meant it was able to operate while on its side, the Xbox One’s slot drive means that operating it vertically is not advised, Panello told Gamespot.

"We don't support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk," he said.

"It wouldn't be a cooling problem, we just didn't design the drive for vertical. Because it's a slot loading drive, we just didn't design it for both."

In contrast, the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 – both of which feature slot drives – may be used vertically.

According to Panello, 80 per cent of people keep their Xbox 360 horizontal.
