Of course they're not going out. But they're on the path to irrelevancy. 95M-115M? No way the 3DS maintains it's current yearly sales level for another 5 to 6 years.

And as I said, Nintendo isn't going to leave the handheld market because that's all they have.

well i dont think 2016-2018 will have these sales as well, maybe 9mil-10mil a year but these next 3 years (2013-2015) we can expect 13mil+, especially this year will be very high with i believe a minimum of 16mil units. But anyway i dont think nintendo going anywhere even though smartphones/etc is hurting business. AC/Pokemon/MH can always saved the market alone as well with a new mario platformer/MK/etc! Its funny though looking back 2-3 years ago i dont think many analyst/etc would of believed nintendo doing well, even vita will do good from now on i believe (not close to 3ds and vita tv doesn't count as handheld). i think its funny wen people think 3ds is screwed cuz its not on DS levels. Thats like A team being undefeated a year then next year loses 3 games but are still 1st! if you get me lol

We will have to wait and see how the 3DS does this year. This should be it's biggest year in terms of sales. It'll end up at 80M tops.

Tops??? More like Minimum!

I still don't see why you think it will go over 80mil. If anything the handhled market is shrinking.

Comparing to the DS yes of course, but no it will do at least 90mil. Do you both think it'll honestly do just 65mil-75mil?

It is 10 million sales behind the DS at the same poingt in its lifecycle.

Really, source?  Even so considering the DS launched at $150 I think and the 3DS launched at $250 it had a really rocky start and even after its price drop its still more expensive, after the $130 model, Pokemon and Zelda come out I don't see why it won't top it.

http://www.vgchartz.com/article/251290/3ds-vs-dsvgchartz-gap-chartsaugust-2013-update/

3DS Vs. DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 1,300,190 - DS

Gap change over last 12 months: 10,228,561 - DS

Total Lead: 10,432,572 – DS

3DS Total Sales: 33,309,280

DS Total Sales: 43,741,852

Yeah the DS was cheaper but the 3DS had a pricecut and re-design much earlier in its lifetime.

"An important note is that the two handhelds launched at different times of the year. The DS first launched in November 2004, while the 3DS launched in February. That would mean the DS has had one more holiday on the market and once the current holiday’s roll around the 3DS should make up a lot of the ground it has currently lost."

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Blaming the gen over gen decline of handheld sales on smartphones is the easy way out. There's much more to it.

Nintendo - Overshot the market with stereoscopic 3D and a $250 launch price (66% higher than their previous handheld). No interest in expanding the market, instead focused on pushing Sony out of the market. Nintendo's attempts at retaining their own audience with appropriate software have been half-hearted at times. Software prices have also gone up which is again overshooting the market. Simply put, Nintendo's sales are down, because in its current state the 3DS still can't address large chunks of the market that bought the DS, and because Nintendo doesn't care for market expansion anymore, thus any losses in their existing audience can't be offset by anything else.

Sony - The PSP already got in big trouble in America before the rise of smartphones. The software market collapsed, so it was clear that their strategy wasn't working. The PSV recycled the same strategy, so the outcome is the same; the difference is that nobody buys the PSV for homebrew, emulation and piracy, an important factor that lifted PSP hardware sales after its software market had collapsed. In Europe the market is simply overshot (in America it's too, but lower price alone wouldn't solve the issue there). A cheap handheld that plays casual games like FIFA is what would sell (like the gimped PSP did in the last couple of years), but the Vita is an expensive device. In Japan Sony lacks the third party support, mainly because their first party studios have sat idle for the longest time and shown next to no interest to grow the installed base (which is also a worldwide problem on top of everything else).

Overall, the PSV strategy is an uncoordinated mess that is about flinging stuff at the wall in hopes that something sticks, because apparently nobody at Sony bothered to analyze why the PSP sold as well as it did. They made the PSV and probably assumed that it would sell because it is a PlayStation.

The bottom line is that both, Nintendo and Sony, were poised to see declines, because they've lost sight of what the handheld market demands and needs. I hope that Nintendo never takes the easy way out and says: "Smartphones, duh. Nothing we can do about it. We made no mistakes with the 3DS."

Why do you make it seem that Yoshida is only blaming smartphones? He indirectly says in the small exert from the OP that the issue is the PSV as a value preposition:

We have to provide a really great value proposition. We have to provide something special when we bring out our portable gaming platforms.

Pretty much admittance that the PSV is not good value. He cant be as candid as you. Hel probably get fired.

Anyways i partly agree with your post. But to say that blaming smartphones is the easy way out when its partly the truth is not entirely accurate. Nintendo, Sony could have executed a perfect plan when it comes to their handhelds and sales would have still been affected by smartphones and gaming on smartphones.
