Doesn't really mean a lot. Simply because Valve is not as big as Sony or Microsoft, so they are most likely going to be selling this at a profit, while Sony and MS won't feel to bad about losing a little bit if they think they can make it back. So like what the article says while this may be more powerful, it'll probably cost more. In which case you are probably better off with PC, unless Steambox does something else?

....ehhh

While Valve isn't as big, they're sitting on a lot more profit than Sony is.  They could afford a loss leading console a lot easier.

But they said that they won't manufacture hardware unless they absolutely have too. Any SteamBox will be coming from a 3rd party manufacturer most likely several.

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

Seeing how little we know at this point it certainly could be more powerful than the PS4 and XboxOne

Really hope we can get some more information on the steambox in the future.

This is the Game of Thrones

Where you either win

or you DIE

The steambox costs more than both the PS4 and XB1 consoles combined. Outperforming them is a rather bare minimum expectation for that price point.

It hasn't been announced yet. We don't know the price.

OT: I think this will be Valve's pet project like Apple TV.

I beg pardon, but it was.

That was confirmed not to be the Steambox. Some third-party company, nothing to do with Valve.

i can see the attraction this has for people who dont want to get really technical having to know alot about computers but still want one and this could be an option. i already have a gaming pc i built last year.

That's because they're privately owned, they don't have to release financial info.

What is known is that they make way more moey per person than google or apple.

They're essentially all profit and no cost... well outside this box anyway.  Which I doubt they're even planning to do Xbox numbers with at first.

Gabe Newell might be the most "secretly" rich guy out there.

What zarx said [probably] makes the argument pointless.  - He could've just said that to throw people off, even though I doubt that.

Although personally, I feel you are still under estimating Sony.  Valve is a small company of about 400 ish employees, with the estimates I've seen of about 2 - 4 billion, 4,000,000,000 / 400 = 10,000,000$ per employee.  If Sony(overall) had the same margin, they'd be looking at over 1 trillion dollars if I did that right.  Even if you only look at Sony Computer Entertainment, a few development studios have more employees than the entirety of Valve.  Overall SCE is probably-I'd guess maybe 5 times larger than the entirety of Valve.  So SCE would have 5 times as much money as Valve, just to have the same profit per employee.    Though Permalite made a good point about credit among other things.

I don't really think there's alot to discuss without solid numbers, because at the moment it is just "x is greater than y", but we don't know what x is, even though we do know what y is.  We can't for certain check the work based on how little we know about x.

I do agree that Gabe is probably the most "secretly" rich guy that isn't a complete secret.

Yeah except Sony's financials are a known quantity since they are a public company.

At 2-4 billion.  They'd be ahead of Sony.

Sony's Asset to Debt ratio is .957% and growing because of loan interest.

They have about 2 billion in assets ahead of debt (think buildings and such not hard cash)... and increasing loans.

So if Valve has 2 billion in assets... they're ahead.

That's not even counting the fact that because Valve is a private company, part or the entire company could be used for collataral on a loan if they so chose... rather then just individual pieces.

Several problems leap out for me.
No.1 I already own a very good PC that plays games. And if/when I decide to upgrade or buy another it won't be an over-priced SFF PC a la Steam Box. The price would have to be very competitive with the current crop of next-gen systems. Even then I just don't know if I would eschew my full fledged gaming PC for one of these.

No. 2 Games. So far this is sounding like a custom Linux based PC which will rely on STREAMING windows based games from your windows based PC for the many games that are not compatible with Linux. Unless a lot more developers jump on board with Linux development I can't see using a Steam Box to play those games across my home network.
