Forums - Microsoft - Xbox One Drops Demo Requirement For Downloadable Games

On Xbox One, games are just games. Whether it's a downloadable retail game or what would formally be known as a Live Arcade game, they're all the same in the Xbox Live Game Store. One consequence of that decision is that there is no demo requirement for games on Xbox One.

"Not all games will have demos like Xbox Live arcade games have had on Xbox 360," Microsoft's Marc Whitten said.

Microsoft's new policy matches the one PlayStation has had for the entirety of PS3. That decision has sometimes been criticized, as games would less frequently offer demos on PlayStation Network. "That said, we are going to work on lots of ways to make it easy for you to find and try new games on the service," he told IGN (via OXM).

Retail games will also be offered digitally on Xbox One. However, unlike Steam, games cannot be preloaded before release. "Not at launch, but you'll see us do this and much more over the life of the program," Whitten pointed out. You will be able to play games as they download, however.

Booo hiss

I'm sure M$ will change their mind though

Even if they don't craft an actual demo, how hard is it for them to release the first level or something from their game?

indies will be happy but it sucks for customers. was always great that every arcade game had a demo. bad that you have to do everything for indies  even if it is bad for the customer lol. well, some big publisher will be obviously also happy about it.

damn is this just indies or all games on Xbox? I didn't know that every game on 360 had a demo for it

So this is just another "drop" to be closer to PS4 or..?

Indies screw us again. Why are we supposed to love them?

I agree, don't blame M$=Blame Sony.  If Sony would have that requirement, all indies/developers would have been doing it.  I am sure that all of the people that support one side or the other have to blame someone for every change in the marketplace.  This time it is Sony's fault.

demos are generally crap anyways and typically don't even represent the full game well. so why all the crying?

..besides, MS should just pick up what sony is already doing instead. full games access for 60 minutes then either pony up to keep playing or move on. being able to continue on your progress in the "demo" period is great for consumers and its doesn't put any burden on developers to create a demo build which is great for them.

That's, for me, the worst news to come out about Xbone thus far since reveal. I have bought tons of XBLA games I would have never bought had I not experienced a demo. And at the same time, there are plenty of PSN games I have not bought because there is no demo. This just means less arcade games for me in the future.
