Forums - Nintendo - Many Nintendo series sell consistantly despite install base

Just a random observation I have made is that many of Nintendos top selling series have consistant sales despite how well the console does.

3D Mario-It seems as if the big revolutionary 3D Mario titles like Mario 64 & Galaxy sell 10-12m and the direct sequels/spinoffs like Galaxy 2 & Sunshine sell roughly 7 million. That is on consoles with install bases of 21, 33 and 100 million.

Donkey Kong-SNES had 3 DKC games, selling 9.3m, 5.15m and 3.5m which averages out to just under 6m. DK64 did 5.3m and DKC Returns is at 6m. So Donkey Kong sells 5-6m on install bases of 33m, 49m, 100m.

Zelda-NES, N64, Wii had 2 flagship titles which the first to release sold 6.5m, 7.6m, 6.8m while the second to release sold 4.4m, 3.4m, 3.7m. SNES, GC had one flagship title which sold 4.6m each.

Metroid-The original on NES and the first Prime for GC both did about 2.75m and all the other entries sold 1.5m give or take 250k.

Kirby-The NES, N64 and Wii mainline Installments all sold between 1.6-1.8m

2D Mario-outside of the original on NES, the flagship 2D Mario titles sell between 18-27m. SMB3-18m, World-20m, NSMBWii-27m.

Mario Kart-this series does rely on install base as the N64/GC/Wii versions all sold about 1/3 install base of console. N64-11m, GC-7m, Wii-33m

Smash Bros-this series has grown with each installment so its hard to determine.

How much did mario kart do on SNES?

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

of course they do. If only 20mil people buy a Nintendo console you know that theres 20mil people wanting to play Nintendo games. 3rd party games are just a bonus, especially the exclusives

I dont mean they simply always sell well, but that many series sell the same no matter how big the install base.

Smash Bros will most likely continue it's trend now that both the 3DS and WiiU are getting it.

How is Sunshine a spinoff?

A more interesting observation is that Nintendo is the number two publisher in all of Europe despite it being their weakest market and having no games in the top 20. (Read some first half 2013 sales report somewhere)

How is Sunshine a spinoff?

Its technically not but it had a strong spinoff vibe to it since Nintendo showed off Mario 128 at Spaceworld 2000 then released Sunshine instead and many gaming sites had Mario 128 slated as a 2004-5 release
