Forums - Gaming - Steam Survey: Most PC Gamers have Weaker PCs Than PS4, Xbox One

Windows XP, 1st gen Phenom X3, 4GB of RAM and a GTS 450, and I'm still running almost every game out there at maximum settings. It's not like you need a powerful PC to run games nowadays much better than consoles, I'm quite sure the graph will change when the minimum requirements go up thanks to the new consoles. I'm planning to upgrade my PC after the release of the next-gen consoles, and I'm quite sure most PC gamers with old rigs are thinking to do the same, so expect the specs to go up in november's Steam survey.

Of course, the more powerful the PC the more in minority the base is. The weaker the PC the larger the base is. The majority of PC gamers play casual games.

There are just so many PCs out there man, people install Steam everywhere to play little games due to the high selection of games that can run with lower specs. They are not dedicated gaming machines, people do taxes on them lol.

The "master race" is just a lame minority.

Mine is comparable to the WiiU I think.

It ran BioShock and Tomb Raider in medium reasonably well. I hope the games coming are still playable on my PC.

Yep, the Wii U would be somewhere around medium or between that and low. Current gen by now is definitely on low.

Don't be jealous just because some of us have the money to get a nice PC and consoles, also portables. Oh and a nice laptop, nice tablet, and a nice smart phone that's not a shitty iPhone. :P

My PC is more powerful than all 3 of the current Next Generation consoles, combined. - Might aswell throw in last generations too.

Still. The article about PC's being weaker than the WiiU because the GPU only has 1Gb of Ram gave me a few laughs, not only because it's incorrect, but shows they have little understanding how the PC's memory hierachy actually works, I would eat my hat if the Wii U was faster than say... a 1Gb Radeon 6950.

If a GPU's memory becomes full, the GPU will then start paging to System Ram, if System Ram gets full then it's paging to the Hard Drive, simple as that, plus the Wii U only has 1Gb dedicated for games, that entire 1Gb isn't dedicated to graphics tasks alone, where-as a GPU's memory is dedicated completely to graphics tasks.

Plus, if history has shown us anything, when a big demanding AAA game is launched and hardly anyone can play it with their current system, AMD and nVidia get a nice big surge in profits, aka. The "Crysis Effect" due to people upgrading in droves.
Today however, even the lowest of low-end can play most games at console levels of quality @ 720P with 30fps just fine, it's just not that demanding, I am interested to see how the Steam statistics change over the next couple of years as most people will finally have an excuse to ditch their 6+ year old PC.

And to add to that, if you have an nVidia Optimus system for example, Steam will count your Intel IGP.

Uh-oh, some PC people are not going to be happy about this!

Not the ones who are above the average, lets face it, there will be a whole lot of laptop users dragging that average down anyway.

What can we take away from this?, current steam users on average have a pc much more powerful than the ps3/360/wiiu, and almost as powerful as the next gen consoles.

Pfft!

Monsieur "Usher" may well think he's got one over on the PC master race by pointing out that the "average" PC gamer has a rig less powerful than a PS4, even though not all gamers have the same rig, even though people who declare themselves to be members of the master race generally have more powerful rigs than average and even though the hardware that the average gamer has makes no difference to them, as long as their own hardware is good, but I have a statistic so horrifying that to hear it is to die.

You see, I've done a survey of my own with console gamers, and the results were shocking. Whereas a significant minority of PC gamers (the aforementioned "master race") do have a console more powerful than the PS4 or Xbone, my survey found that 0% of console gamers were rocking such hardware. 0%! I couldn't believe my eyes, but the data was all there and the conclusion was irrefutable. What's more, the majority of console gamers were using hardware no more powerful than the Xbox 360 or PS3, consoles almost a decade old! And worse still, a plurality of them were using a machine as powerful as the Nintendo Wii. We were all shocked by this, and my research partner later committed suicide by locking himself in a non-ventilated room with a first-gen Xbox 360 and no fan (we found him roasted thoroughly and sold his body to a local kebab vendor), but I feel I must tell the public about our findings.

Your move now, Usher-san.
