Forums - Gaming - Remind me again why online multiplayer matters.

Honestly, I think it goes beyond competition, I think people simply enjoy playing games with others, and it doesn't even have to be between people who know each other. I've helped people and been helped by others while playing Dark Souls, or found some nice sparring partners for Super Street Fighter IV, or simply received nice messages from people while exchanging pawns in Dragon's Dogma. I know it's easy to reduce all online interactions to the annoying, immature gamers, but there's a lot of regular, decent people you can play with and against as well.

It don't matter to me. Online coop matters more i think, since it's fun

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

I wish splitscreen wasn't viewed so much less important then online.
I feel like alot of games start to go the 2 player splitscreen max way.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

I was expecting to find someone I could partner my character with to be able to take on Moxxi's arena.  The guy then abuses my intelligence, questioning my ability to play.  He then goes and tells me to take this shield.  He must of wanted a more powerful drone to help him level up.  Thing is, a shield is worse than a more powerful weapon, because it means you can't die.  And then going against the final boss boss they added, that was hard, I couldn't do enough damage, nor could I end up dying.  It became akin to throwing rocks against the wall.

What I find, it seems at best, you get people acting as smarter bots to play.  Unless my drive is to build up my ego by defeating others, I just don't see much difference.  Bots give me enough challenge, if that is what I am after.

Oh I remember that arena, very time consuming...that sounds bad pretty much no way to kill the final boss without a high level coming in and helping you..Borderlands 2 is the same way with the mods they try to put out updates to stop it but people always find a way around it :/...  I have the platinum trophy in the original and the 2nd... haven't touched the 2nd since I got the platinum, really wanna go back and get the dlc...suppose I will one day.

Modding has ruined online quite a bit in some games.. had a friend simply search for a ground war public game in mw2 on the xbox...got a kill which got him ''deranked'', and got banned for 2 weeks for joining a ''modded'' lobby...when he simply searched  for a online game.

If you ever get a current gen console again feel free to add me I love co-op games and play legitimately... haven't played much competitive mutiplayer lately has got pretty dull to me.. not sure which next gen console I will be getting yet.. leaning towards the ps4 right now.

Quotes OP before edits are made (hopefully!)

I added this paragraph to the top of the post, to clarify where I am coming from:

Edit: Note that this initial post comes from my personal bias as someone who seeks to be involved with, and build, online community for gamer, and gets sick of the whole Facebook approach of people not really knowing anyone but acting as voyeurs and exhibitionists.  People show no ability to post context in regards to what they share with others from an interest standpoint.  Also, I have little room in my life for just doing online.  I am dire need of finding work and improving my personal network.  And I am frustrated at what I see is not caring.  Heck, I am annoyed I can't even get a retro gaming forum here, and if you see me repeatedly requesting myself get banned, it comes out of all that.  Anyhow, with this bias in mind, and my interest in having real community, read the post below.  This is an edit add to my initial post for clarity.

Wow.  Way to make me sympathize with you as a person and see things from your point of view.  :(

Pardon my not reading the tone right, if I failed.  I can take it as I didin't explain correctly and seem to have contempt for others, and you are sad I failed.  Or you did pick it up, and see my issues, and end up feeling sad about it.  I do have tons of challenges, so I can say that what you did likely means both, and it does.

I picked up your meaning, saw your issues, and legitimately felt bad.  Darn you.

No problem and thanks.  Sorry for not getting it.

Halo doesn't have bots, this is pretty much my reason for online MP.

Companies got rid of bots, and split screen, under the belief they would get enough interest to play with online multiplayer, and they focused there.  End result was loss of features, due to online multiplayer.

It's really unfortunate too, bots are the best, they play fair and never call me racial or homophobic slurs for doing poorly :(

To answer the OP's question, it's because the hardcore don't really have "friends," but they still get very lonely...
