Both lacked compelling software and were selling poorly because of that. similar situations in every sense of the word, especially when both got price cut's just before the holidays, backed by a great end of the year lineup.

....hopefully followed by a similar resurgence in sales and even better games the following year.

the following year has MK8, smash, zelda?, X, bayo, smtxfe, yoshi, + who knows what else? I think that part is covered.

Very true, the price cut+holiday 2011 gave a huge boost for 3DS but 2012 was kinda lackluster in terms of big software releases. Japan had alot but im the west there wasnt a whole lot outside of Kid Icarus, Resident Evil, Kingdom Hearts, NSMB2, Paper Mario and the XL which actually raised the price. Those are all great but not enough for an entire year. 2013 on the other hand consists of Fire Emblem, Luigis Mansion, Lego City, DKC Returns 3D, Monster Hunter 3, Animal Crossing, Mario & Luigi, Pokemon, Zelda, Mario Party and the 2DS which reduces the price by $40. So essentially double the amount of high selling releases and a reduction in price.

So far it looks like 2014 for Wii U is going to be more similar to 3DS 2013 rather than 2012. It has Mario Kart, Smash Bros, X, Yarn Yoshi, Bayonetta, SMTxFE, 3rd Sonic game and likely a few more surprises which could be Zelda, Wii Sports, the rumored Pokemon fighting game and maybe 1-2 more collaborations with 3rd parties.

Basically I see Wii U having a very good 2014. 2015 could be great as well with a price cut to $199, games like Mario Universe, Metroid, Animal Crossing, Kirby and who knows what else. Even if Wii U doesnt win this generation in total sales, it should be competitive with PS4/One for a few years.

price cut to 200$? that's crazy.

BTW, you won the bet, i posted on your profile and you didn't reply :P

when people use the Wii U and 3DS comparison it's not about the exact number or situation- it is about the idea that a console can make a comeback.

The Wii U doesn't need a "comeback" like the 3DS did. The Wii U needs to be resurrected. I'm not saying it's impossible. I'm just saying the situations aren't as similar as some would have you believe and it's something that's never been accomplished before. I personally don't think it will have the effects that some here believe it will.

judging by your sig, you're a Sony fan, so shouldn't you know about the PS3?

Did you smoke something ?

3DS doesnt have 1/4 of competition Wii U has... it will get obliterated this holiday season, and you can quote/bet me on that

naw come on :P

I don't think the pricecut is going to help the Wii-U much at all, maybe the first few weeks a bit. An unappealing system at $350 is still unappealing at $300.
