Can't you turn off the 3D feature on the 3DS off? Why would you need this? It's barely portable cause you can't fold it and place it in your pocket.

Seems strange indeed. But it would seem to me such a thing could easily be implemented with a system update sometime in the future.

Kids won't turn 3D off and thus potentially harm their eyes.
This is still small enough to be portable.
