Forums - Gaming - I fail to see the hyping of cloud computing beyond people drinking buzzword kool-aid

I do not think you are really looking for a real explanation but if you really want to educate yourself; you can use Bing (or Google I guess looking at your post history and the "love" you have for Microsoft) and look at what Microsoft Azure / Amazon S3 or even Google Computing (in preview). Nothing to do with Gaikai or anything like that even if some forum experts claim it is the same.

Computing instances and VCPUs is all about what Microsoft is envisioning, nothing remotely close to what Gaikai or Online are... And YES, computing instances can obviously act as a dedicated servers so it will be mostly used by for that as it does not requires any special codes or synchronization patterns in the games... For every console out there Microsoft is giving the dev. (and the game) 3 vCPUs in the so called cloud (computing instance in their datacenter); and the dev can use those vCPUs to do anything (IA, pre-rendering of lightning for huge scene, pre-processing stuff, on-going calculation of the game world, etc... anything).

This thread will just be another bashing fest anyway, good job we did not have enough of these lately!

It sounds like you make me out to be some member of the XBOX tribe, and any questioning posts you are calling me on as showing a lack of loyalty.  I am not part of any tribe, and if you see any of my recent posting history, you can see I am not on the XBox bandwagon now.  I don't own any current gen console either, but do own a 3DS (and the OUYA and Neo-Geo X systems I have I don't consider current gen).

By the way, I had googled it, but find Microsoft has not said much outside of spin cloud into the realm of blast processing.

This thread becoming a bashing fest is just reality, nothing to do with you being in a "tribe" or not.

Also I took the time to explain (in bold) what was cloud computing in my post but you focused on your "tribe" thing and on the fact that this thread would become a bashing fest. So for me, you are not interrested into understanding what the cloud computing instances can bring to the Xbox One / PS4. And this is why I believe you are not really interrested by an anwser and you already made your oppinion about it.

Now even if you ignored 80% of my post, If you really Googled for Microsoft Azure and Cloud Computing, then you should know what it is and what it can bring to the developpers (in general, not only on Xbox One but also on PS4). If you failed to see that while Googling, then I do not know what else to tell you; it becomes a matter of oppinion at this point.

Understanding the point of my post would help.  The main thrust of it is people getting hyped about the concept without even understanding it.  You saw that the Forza 5 video was rolled out, as evidence of the power.  And what you saw with Forza 5 was merely ease to administer dedicated servers.  The lead on Forza 5 even said this.  It is drinking a bunch of buzzword kool-aid, without understanding.  The core of cloud now, in a practical sense is dedicated servers.  And Microsoft is hyping that.

And the tribe thing came up, because you referenced what you perceived as a stand on consoles was.

And yes, I had googled cloud computing.  It keeps coming up as the virtualization of the management of servers, so you run a pool virtually, making it easier to scale.  There is SOME stuff that would be like what was discussed with grid, but that is not the core of how industry is using it.  The core of it is pretty much client-server, virtualized.  And I did post THIS link on VGChartz (or something like it), regarding the difference:

http://www.vservercenter.com/dedicated-server

And here is my google search:

http://www.google.com/#psj=1&q=cloud+computing+vs+dedicated+server

And if you want to compare it vs grid, you have this:

http://www.google.com/#psj=1&q=cloud+computing+vs+grid+computing

well... actually, Titanfall is only able to be played exclusively on xbox 360 and ONE consoles because of the Microsoft cloud (dedicated servers, in this case), they said in an interview, play a game like this, wouldn't be possible in matches that players are the host. I think at PC's, Respawn've got their own servers.

Besides the features that have been shown at the Forza 5 video, it gives a great help to the hardware. I'll try to explain it with an simple example:

-The GPU uses it's power:
*80% graphics
*15% AI
*5% other
The IA and the "other" could be processed in the cloud, then all the GPU would be used to graphics!!

*sorry for English errors*

Well, there is nothing I can add then.

Here was your question : "Again, please show me it is more than just some corporate kool-aid being served here and people swallowing it and hyped, because their console maker of choice needs to be defended."...

Well, as you found out it is all about dynamically allocating vCPUs, computing instance, workers etc... And be able to server millions of console because of this infrastructure (compared to fixed dedicated servers (VM or not). Now, either you do not see anything to be hyped for into that (I see a lot to be hyped for) or you just ignore this fact just because on top of being super scalable it can ALSO be simply used a dedicated server (you seem to really stuck on that part like it is bad to be able to also do that with Azure)...

Either way what is the point of responding to you if you keep ignoring this as the anwser to your question...

LMAO ridiculous, if that were the case the PC version would not be happening. Respawn do NOT have 1% the servers MS have. People will believe any marketing hype. Titan fall has not even been ruled out for PS4, most likely it will end up on PS4.

Also, Forza can be played OFFLINE, so the cloud is NOthing but BS, you telling me people who play offline will have a different forza 5 then people who don't? Not going to happen. The Cloud is MS marketing because they know they have a weaker console.

Cloud shmoud.

Why would Microsoft be so unwilling to "split" their user base with Kinect, yet they are willing to slit it with "teh cloud"?

Seeing as it's no longer required to have your XB1 connected to the net to function, will developers want to risk relying on "teh cloud " for on the fly calculations when a good portion of the user base won't be using it?

Yep, its just MS PR and marketing because Sony surprised them with a more powerfull machine.

Every Xbox One CAN be connected to the internet.
A Xbox One that comes without Kinect can't use it until you pay $150 for the hardware device.

So the barrier to buy and play Kinect games would be much bigger than connecting the console to the internet.

Games like Left 4 Dead / Left 4 Dead 2 are pretty much online only and they did really well on the Xbox 360.
Titanfall will do pretty well and it is online only as well. Are you worried that somehow people won't connect their next gen system to the internet any longer?

The Cloud will be a very important feature next gen. You have to be in denial not to see this.

But hey, maybe IBM, Google, Apple, Amazon and MS are all wrong and the cloud is a fad. They invested BILLIONS of USD for a reason.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

about the Respawn servers, that's why I used the word "THINK".

and YES, people who play it offline won't have the same power as playing a connected match. I don't think the difference is noticeable by human eyes, but that's how it works, and besides piracy, that's why microsoft wanted everyone to be always connected(that's going to be the future).

Connecting your console to the internet, and requiring internet for single player games are 2 completely different things.

Don't try and twist my words.
