... you do know that you're proving the opposite point true, don't you?  That Sony can sell millions of consoles without depending on scoring a massive hit or starting a casual craze?  Somehow I think you missed something.  Regardless, thanks for helping the argument for Sony.

Three things wrong with that. First, the question was who would sell more and if they could servive without their current IPs. Nintendo can. Sony can't. No company can servive when their best selling IP hit only 6m. Second, you imply that starting a craze some how takes away from the quality of the game, when in fact, the quality of the game is what started the craze. Wrong. Three, you imply that casual games are lesser games. Wrong. People still play Wii Sports today. People love Wii Sports today. Most people have never heard of Uncharted.

Nintendo wins hands down. If they couldn't use their old IPs, they'd simply make new IPs to fit the high quality games that they were missing. And they'd sell exactly like they do now and be used for the next 30 years. That's what they do. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft make amazing and pretty much equal quality games, but Nintendo makes more, they make them more consistantly, they sell more copies of them, they spend less money on them, and they make more money off of them.

Sony has Gran Turismo.

How does that, in any way "prove your point?"

For platformers nintendo. For everything else sony.

Zelda is not a new IP :V

NAUGHTY GODS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
being serious though Sony>MS=Ninty. seriously Ninty why cant you sell new IPs... that arent casual (Wii Series)
Im sure Ninty still have it in them to make another big franchise like Zelda or DKC but dont want to take risks, they cant recreate the success of Mario however, not with the competition they have now.

Nintendo makes more than platformers. Do you seriously believe that if Nintendo didn't have access to those IP's, they wouldn't just create a new IP jacket to fill it's missing genre's? And do you seriously believe that they wouldn't be as good, especially when Nintendo notoriously creates it's games before throwing the franchise jacket on it? Come on now.

It has nothing to do with not taking risks. They only add new IP's when they are making a new game in a genre that doesn't fit with any of their existing IPs. Its good from a marketing and consumer stand point. They make more money because of the name, and consumers are more exposed to more games of amazing quality. Wonderful 101 is a great game. It would sell millions more if it was a Nintando all-star game like it was going to be. Same awesome game. Different name.

And again, they can "recreate," and even violently surpass, the success of Mario. Wii Sports has sold double what the original Mario did. And their no "you can't count it because it's a bundle." They both were. The good, quality games sold the consoles.

Dude, haha, what the hell are you talking about?  I implied that starting a craze takes away from the quality of a game or that casual games are lesser games?  No, I did not imply, you inferred.  Learn the difference.  Seriously.

Look, let me explain this to you, and why you're proving that Sony would do just fine without depending on established IP.  You're saying that Sony doesn't have any massive hits--yet their consoles still sell well and on a consistant basis.  Much more so than Nintendo or Microsoft, Sony has jumped to new IP with each new console while leaving behind previous IP.  That is to say, the reason Sony consoles perform well is that they're able to keep producing new IP that sell the consoles.  Playstation fans, in general, aren't buying a Playstation for the same IP, they're buying them because of the variety and number of IP.

I think it's quite obvious that Playstation would do just fine if they had to leave their current IP behind, as they're constantly producing new IP, anyway.  You've helped to prove that the brand is not dependent on any one IP and thus wouldn't be all that hurt with the loss.

Understand now?

Sony. They have never relied on any one particular franchise to sell their hardware. SCEE gives their development teams a lot of creative freedom.. and as a result we get a lot of unique IP's on their platform, spreading though many different genres. So there is something for everyone. (Oh and Naughty Dog :P)

Microsoft are pretty stagnant in their first party offerings in terms of creativity (and output). I can't think of any other IP they've made this generation apart from Viva Pinata and Kinect Sports. That said, their games sell and cater to their demographic quite nicely.

Nintendo are the true wild card. They haven't made many new IP's since the N64. It all went a bit after the Gamecube and then the Wii.. But titles like Wii Sports and Brain Training can hit it out of the park in terms of sales. Creatively, outside of casual titles they've made last gen.. they are also lacking in that area - in terms of actually producing new IP's themselves.
