Wow this is huge news. Way bigger than FIFA.
Only if the Xbone is the only console with them though.

Please let it be so! Either way I'm very pleased that Ghosts has dedicated servers...I was hearing from a bunch of people that it wouldn't. |
I'm actually suspecting Titan Fall for NA as a possibility due to closeness with EA this year, and MS just might pay the bills for the studio 2-3yrs plus for the ability to do so, and RE take the deal just to raise hype for their brand...
-edit- also one of the PR Spinsters @ IW said "players don't like dedicated servers" so that is why this is a bigger shock... still not getting the game personally, but am more open to its purchase on X1 than before.

On PC probably, since that is Windows/Microsoft and can use the same cloud/server tech pretty easily. On PS4 I wouldn't be surprised if games are still stuck using P2P unless they decide to pay for servers on maybe a per game basis or make the publishers fork it up for servers. Gaikai won't be ready till 2014 and I don't think Sony has ever once mentioned having dedicated servers as part of it or any other offering. As a competitive multiplayer person, if Sony does not do dedicated servers, they will lose lots of hardcore gamers after a while. |
-Gaikai is used for remote play and it will be ready at launch
-MAG, Killzone, Resistance, SOCOM 4, and BF3 all used dedicated servers and ran flawlessly. It won't be hard at all...

yes it will be.... Gaikai infrastructure is a streaming platform.... unless they run Azure/orlean... it's not like they are dynamicaly allocating resources..... it's like cars it's not because you have 60 race cars that you will be easily able to participate in a dirt race if they are not equiped or ready to do so....
then you have location.... yeah they might free up or even put brand new servers here and there... but nowhere close to MS coverage, nowhere close to the number of years they'll be able to support them, and nowhere close to the amount of space and resources MS can allocate....
people must stop smoking fumes and get real..... if MS cloud is PR BS... Sony being able to even have in its line of sight MS server/cloud infrastructure is a pipe dream even less realistic than betting on a war veteran with no legs to beat Usain Bolt at a sprint race.... IT WON'T HAPPEN EVER.... it's a financial impossibility end of story....

Killzone was not on dedicated servers. Actual gameplay ran peer to peer. SOCOM 4 and MAG are going to be shut down soon. That's the downside of relying on a publisher for dedicated servers, and it's one of the biggest advantages of the cloud from MS. It's cheaper. Apparently a lot cheaper.

because it is not dedicated.... per say
they have X amount of servers and those can all be used dynamically on per need basis real time for any game that opt in.... let say you have 10 azure/orlean server and 10 games to play MP.... you don't need to allocate one to each... each server are available to all 10 games.... so let say game one requires 5 servers and the 9 other only 1... then it splits it up accordingly.... if 5 years from now game 3 needs 2, game 5 half of one and the other need 7.5, then it allocates accordingly....
and they pay based on bandwith used or different program subscriptions.... no need to pay for a full servers in 6 continents, with X amount of prepaid bandwith usage..... they pay for what they actually need and use.... nothing more

I might get this one if they have enough at launch.

So BF3 (A third pary game) has dedicated servers, but COD can't?
I'm not saying it can't I'm saying there isn't a single third party or any of the big three beside MS that can deliver the level of services and quality as widespread that MS is capable with their offering/infrastructures and certainly not at the same attractive price... thinking that a third party alone or Sony will be able to offer the same level of QoS and maintain it long term is a pipe dream that will never come true.... it's one of MS main business after all way over the XB brand...cloud service is to MS what TVs are to Sony...

Actually Sony is starting to phase out of its TV business. Cameras is more like their new current dominating field. Also once again I have to mention Gaikai...
